Happy Winter Solstice 2017 Everyone

Your opinion is not a fact.

Neither is yours. There have been a number of religions that practiced holidays at the winter solstice.. such as Triespero celebrating the birth of Hercules. It's not a matter of 'copying' each other. It's a matter of a regular celestial event that has significance to people. You don't have to come in contact with other cultures and religions to notice, well, the days are starting to get longer. Iran had the Yalda festival, when Mithra was supposed to have been born (The Iranian mithraism is much older than the Roman one). Stonehenge marked the winter solstice, and that is far older than even Judaism.

Let's face it, the reason for the season is the tilt of the earth on the axis, and that was happening long before man came on the scene. Man just noted it, and gave it religious significance.

Praise be! The Gods plan way ahead.

Very humbling isn't it?

I'm betting the early people had a bit of guidance in that regard, from what some cultures call the Sky People.

I had a friend that got all wound around his panties because the Christians "stole" the Winter Solstice from the Pagans. I asked him if he still celebrated Winter Solstice and he said, "Yep". I pointed out that since he still celebrated it that nobody stole anything since he still had it. He had that button that I thoroughly enjoyed pushing, at least once a day. He cared. I didn't. Still don't.

Happy solstice! Misty at Stonehenge this morning!

Newgrange, in Ireland was built long before Stonehenge, or the Pyramids, and is aligned so that the sunrise shines down the passageway into the mound, and illuminates the central chamber on midwinter solstice.
Newgrange during Winter Solstice is on my bucket list, thought it's pretty deep in the pail!

Hope you all enjoy the original holiday, and the ONLY reason we have any kind of festive holiday at this time of year just about anywhere in the world.

Blessed Be.

Why don't you just be up-front and just say "Bite me, Christians", since that's all this post is about...

Cool. The super short days aren't my favorite.

The fake trees with lights we have make people think we're devout Christians??? What does an evergreen have to do with Jesus, anyway???

(I asked santa for a new shotgun. That way my wife can shoot him for breaking and entering.):2razz:

Going to a Solstice Party tonite at the Irish Cultural Center. Fun stuff.

Its damned cold here though, in the 50's, need to find a jacket and some extra sox.

Remember, Axial Tilt is the Reason for the Season!

Beat him at his own game it doesn't piss me off and I'm Christian. Why would it? Rosh Hashanah doesn't bother me nor does Hanukkah.

I enjoy pointing out Leftist hypocrisy, which was the point of my post, but exactly... I mean, I "celebrate" the Winter Solstice solely because it means the days are getting longer again and I eventually won't have to drive home from work in the dark anymore... I celebrate Christmas because I am a Christian and it is the day that we observe the birth of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Other holidays generally don't bother me in the slightest. Well, the hypocrisy of celebrating Thanksgiving and then immediately trampling over people for on-sale electronics admittedly bothers me (in a mostly humorous way), but otherwise people have their own backgrounds, heritages, and reasons to celebrate certain holidays, and that's cool.

It very difficult for some religious folks to concede to facts.
It's just the way things are.

Which is why I don't observe any of the pagan based holidays...

Where did"leftist" come from? Christians can't be leftist? Like Jesus caring for the poor and downtrodden?

Leftist came from when I was responding to Calamity, so no, I wasn't making such a claim. :)

I vaguely recall Maes Howe in the Orkney Islands to the north of Scotland does something similar.
