The Ghost of Hillary Still Haunts Evangelicals

If abortion is what you always base your vote on and you use the term "abortionist", no democrat will ever stand a chance at getting your vote. Go ahead and take your seat on the fringe right and be prepared to swallow whatever the republican party serves you. It was Trump this time, how's that tasting? A man who is so vehemently pro-life he's not sure if he's donated to PP or not...

That may very well be why he won't release his tax forms.

David French says that after six months of a dysfunctional Presidency, it’s time for evangelicals to realize that she is no longer a threat and to come to their senses:

It’s the ancient human tendency. We always refight the last war, and the last war featured two equally powerful corrupt forces, but one of them had the advantage of at least paying lip service to Christian conservative concerns. There’s a new political war now, and in this one, the most powerful man in the land has proven to be exactly as deceptive and erratic as many of us feared. Yes, some of the forces opposing him are hysterical and unhinged. But if Christians want to preserve their witness and their influence, they cannot and must not march in lockstep behind a man who scorns their values in word and, most important, in deed.

Who is David French (besides someone who really dislikes Trump)?

French, who is in his late 40s, was awarded the Bronze Star after leaving a comfortable legal career to serve in Iraq in 2007. He's a Harvard-educated lawyer and former Constitutional professor at Cornell University, a former evangelical organizer for Mitt Romney's two presidential campaigns, and a father and husband with a multi-racial family. I find “preserving their witness” to be a powerful phrase. Is this a legitimate caution?

Christians aside, let's look at the electorate as a whole. Gallup had a poll out last year that showed 25% of the total electorate disliked both candidates, that included 54% of independents. These folks looked upon both major party candidates as evil. Yet, most of them didn't vote their convictions, they held their nose and voted for the lesser of two evils or for the one they thought was the lesser of two evils at the time. Since third party candidates received 6% of the total vote, that means 19 out of that 25%, 76% voted for the candidate they disliked the least. Not the one they wanted to win, but against the one they wanted to lose the most. There thinking, one of the two major party candidates had to win, so we might as well voted for the lesser of two evils and hope that minimizes the damage done.

Independents were worst, only 12% of independents voted third party. Out of that 54% who disliked both candidate, 12 out of that 54 followed through with their convictions voting against both candidates while the rest held their nose voting for the candidate they hated or disliked the least. That's 22% of independents who cast their vote for lesser of two evils. Again, the thinking was a third party candidate couldn't win, so might as well try to limit the damage done by voting for the least horrible candidate. Independents went to Trump 46-42 with 12% voting third party.

What we have in this country isn't a will to follow through with one's convictions. The above shows that. But perhaps that is what most of us do. We go along and hope for the best. In this case we went along with the two major political parties who gave us two bum candidates that no one wanted outside of their avid supporters. The two major parties won, showing they can nominate and do anything they they want, we will just go along with them. Oh we may kick a Republican or a Democrat out, we can change the party who controls congress, but what does that get us? Just more of the same, basically rule by political party and not by the people.

But we get the government we deserve. We have the president we deserve, we voted and allowed it to happen. Perhaps what we don't realize is evil is still evil even if that evil is a matter of degree. We go along and toss our convictions.

It's funny to see liberals lamenting that evangelicals voted for pro-life Trump over Hillary the abortionist. Speaking of which, I've never seen a liberal that wasn't glad that their mother didn't abort them.

Really?

I guess you haven't read many posts on the abortion forum on the DP.
