Bible Studies at White House. [W:154]

Re: Bible Studies at White House.

Evidently what you are saying is based on lies...did you know the writers personally? You talk as though you do. And who said it was an apple anyway?

Do you have any proof that they are lies? Your post are proof-free. Anyway, what does it matter? The story is a piece of fiction.

Not lies at all. It's historical fact. Another fact is that almost every English translation of those stories leaves out key words, so there is no way any Christian could understand those Jewish stories. The interpreters often don't know the meaning of the stories, so they select the wrong words because they have not studied the meaning of the texts.

The snake was a snake, not Satan, and the real message of the story is lost on Christians. The story has more to do with the moral difference between humans and animals, and along with that, the dividing line between objective and subjective ethics, than it does with some alleged fall from grace due to Satan. The fact is that Christians misinterpret all of the Hebrew stories, basically due to a great deal of anti-Semitism. Christians hated Jews so much they never bothered to ask Jews what they really meant by such things as God, the story of Noah, Adam and Eve, etc. That's why your religion has a very shaky foundation. Not just from a scientific standpoint, but from an historical and theological one. Your interpretations cannot be better than the interpretation of the Jews who wrote the stories.

True. There is nothing new in Christianity.

Well obviously I don't put much stock in what the Jews have to say about their "stories"...after all, they got it horribly wrong about the Messiah...Matthew 21:42,43; Matthew 23:37,38

The Jews got it right about the alleged demi-God bastard child named Jesus. The evidence is that Jesus was not even a real person, much less a god. But, thanks for admitting that you Christians are a fraud --- you claim to believe in thje same god as the Jews while misinterpreting every Hebrew story. Purely on historical grounds then, Christianity is proven BS on steroids.

Notice too how science shreds your literalist religion as well? Looks like you Christians hate Jews and science. I bet someone like Albert Einstein must give you nightmares --- a Jewish scientist.

Re: Bible Studies at White House.

So what is your explanation...let's hear it...why does God permit evil and human suffering?

I don't believe there is a god. I believe that humans evolved and, just as we have changed physically over the years, our culture and language and customs and even our morality, the names and abilities of our gods, have changed to suit the circumstances. The entity you call "god" exists as a subjective relic of human evolution that has and will change along with every other aspect of our species' evolution, perhaps even out of existence.

It's beautiful really that whatever joys and tragedies we experience in our lives we know that we are but a small part of something greater than it ever was but not as good as it can be. As someone who believes in evolution, I know there remains the possibility that human potential is greater than the writers of the bibles could have conceived.

Hopefully, we can one day become a species secure enough in its understanding of the world and its place in history that we don't need subjective spiritual spackle to fill in the gaps and religious opiates to comfort us. If we ever give up faith, we may have to rename our species, as religion is such a common part of the human condition that it is, quite obviously, a human trait.

If religion provides you some comfort then I don't begrudge you that, if you need it. Faith is a very human thing to have. I draw the line, though, when it authorizes murder and oppression, which it does too often. The religious should be especially self-conscious about making magical claims, and yet they aren't. That's the selfish thing about it.

I am secure enough not to need religion.

I am secure enough not to need religion.

Many people are. The trick is to help people be secure enough to admit that fact to their friends and families.

Re: Bible Studies at White House.

I agree with Ramoss --- Christians have completely distorted the Jewish stories beyond all recognition.

Got a flash for you. It was the Jews who started Christianity.

How many Christians know the true meaning the Adam and Eve story has for Jews? About zero.

Flush

Last time I read something that stupid it was in its proper place at the bottom of a bird cage.

Yeah sure...that is why you are drawn to the religious threads like a bees are to nectar...
