Here's a clip from three different news units, expressing their opinion of the upcoming appointment of Newt's wife as Ambassador to the Vatican. In an earlier post, I thought that this was a strange appointment and seemed only to reward Newt for his early support/loyalty in the 2016 campaign. Callista doesn't seem to have crammed much for the confirmation hearing.

Isn't patronage great? At least the Administration will be able to take credit for filling one of the vacant Ambassadorships!

Great line from the NR piece.

It was really something to hear that kind of moralistic tut-tutting from Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and Newt Gingrich — the cats with nine wives.

LOL....LOL....LOL

The fact that the Callista Gingrich appointment isn't an Onion piece is truly telling of how F'd up our new Administration is.

Is she from Mordor?

maybe she can get Denny Hastert a job over there, like molester in chief, or sumthin' ...........

yes, with this abomination of an administration morality has surly hit a new low ............. and to think these assholes got the Jebus vote ...........

Sorry, but why is this a thing? Every President has done something similar with ambassador appointments.

The 'thing' is DJT has finally appointed an Ambassador! What were you thinking this was about? :lamo

Please name another Appointment to The Vatican who had such a "colorful" history as Callista's.

The ambassador to the Vatican isn't exactly a big deal. So why would you or anyone else care who gets the job?

Just another part of the jig-saw puzzle of idiocy.

For some people it just takes longer to see what the completed puzzle will look like.

You are of course aware that 30-40% of ALL ambassador postings are political favors....right? Tell me...did you bemoan how ****ed up the Obama administration was when Obama did the same thing? Or was that 'different'?

"President Obama used to say that he wanted to rely more on career diplomats to serve as U.S. ambassadors. But the State Department's professional association, the American Foreign Service Association or AFSA, says that he has named a higher percentage of political appointees than his predecessors. He's given plum assignments to political donors such as Bell, who have made headlines recently with embarrassing gaffes at their confirmation hearings.

The AFSA has been so worried about how ambassadors are chosen that it's drawing up a list of basic qualifications for the job: knowing, for example, what U.S. interests are in the country where they are going to work.

The report, to be released later this month, comes at a time when there's been increased scrutiny of Obama's picks.

The AFSA, which keeps track of appointments, says in his second term so far, Obama has named a record number of political appointees, more than half, as compared to other recent presidents, who tend to name donors and friends to about one-third of the ambassadorial posts."

Snark noted.

I would hope people would be rational enough to save their outrage for truly outrageous events. This isn't one if those.

I think you're totally missing the point.

It's not so much that Trump appointed an ambassador as a political favor,

It's specifically that for the Holy See - he picked Gingrich.

Do you NOT see the irony there?

Oi...

It's not outrage. It's finger pointing and laughing.

You have a problem with Calista Gingrich? And since you are concerned, isnt the Vatican the place for redemption and forgiveness? At any rate...its good to see liberals so sensitive towards the Catholic church. Usually they trip over themselves with hatred, loathing and derision while pointing out the history of the Catholic Priesthood and homosexual pedophilia.

The hypocrisy of the so called 'God fearing Christian Trump supporters' is mind boggling.

Politics has become to new religion for the far right, even for the religious right in this country.

Often too true.

But I do have a problem with Gingrich being named to this particular position because of the adultery issue. But I've just Googled, and here is the National Catholic Register's opinion:

In the event, the Vatican cares less about the moral history of an ambassadorial nominee than it does about the nominee's access to the decision-makers in the administration. My friend, Ambassador Tom Melady, who served as Vatican ambassador during the administration of George H. W. Bush and who has since gone to God, used to tell the story about one of his successors, former Congresswoman Lindy Boggs. When the White House floated her name, a Vatican official contacted Melady to ask if she would have access to decision-makers, seeing as it was her husband, Hale Boggs, who had been Majority Leader in the House, and she had never held a leadership position in Congress. Melady explained that her son ran the most influential lobbying firm in Washington and her calls would be answered.

Some months later, according to Melady, Ambassador Boggs was called to a meeting by the Vatican's foreign minister. There was a matter of some urgency he wished to bring up. Mrs. Boggs asked if she could borrow the phone on his desk, and within two minutes, she had Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on the phone. That is what the Vatican wants in an ambassador. https://www.ncronline.org/blogs/distinctly-catholic/callista-gingrich-vatican
