As someone who grew up very Catholic, the actions of the church regarding the abuse of minors are very disturbing. I honestly don't see how anyone can choose to be associated with it knowing what they have done.
I grew up Catholic and American, and mixed-race but ethnically Black-American as well.
Without getting into every past--and current--evil the United States of America is involved in, the Catholic Church itself operated in a manner pertaining to sexual abuse of minors like most
major institutions of America decades ago.
It is also worth noting the Catholic Church has its own legal system (Canon Law) and respects due process. Something the American legal system supposedly prides itself on. I say that because many say if a priest is
accused the Church ought on mere accusation persecute him in some way. That's not how due process works though.
But the Boy Scouts, New York City Public Schools, correctional facilities for boys all operated decades ago with that code of silence. Does not make it right and I in fact think it was very wrong. But what I am saying is if you went back to the 1950s or 1960s in America it was believed all major institutions were too important for people to lose faith in so therefore every scandal had to be quietly handled and covered up.
The Catholic Bishops acted out of mixed motives too. Some motives entirely selfish and other motives actually had virtue in my view.
I mean, today in the USA we think every person's business needs to be put on blast (unless its us then we get mad), but there was a view decades ago by Bishops and others that not every persons business need to be put on public blast. In particular children that might have been abused were thought to need their privacy protected.
Personally, I think Bishops and clergy ought be careful about wrapping themselves so tight to secular institutions of power, and remember that Jesus judges them all. Worldly power is enticing but as the Bible forewarns, whatever happens in the dark shall come to the light.
Now, currently, Americans are engaged in the most evil on earth, second only perhaps to ISIS (but then America is deeply tied at the hip to ISIS). The Catholic Church would do well to distance itself from evil American institutions of power, but I doubt it will. Especially if the Vatican allows the evil CIA to use the Vatican Bank to funnel money through or launder heroin money.
I think the Orthodox have a better perception of Christianity. Not that they don't have their own scandals at times.
