Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792, 2336]

Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792]

So what? The bible is made up of 2 parts, not just one part. And it is not that the new bible repudiates the old testament/cancels out the words of the old testament.

as I said Christianity is based more on New Testament (the Old Testament being inadequate) the incorporation of Christianity into the Roman Empire, and the emergence of Christianity after the fall of the Roman Empire. Do you understand now?

Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792]

so it is one of the main reasons but not the overwhelming reason?? care to rethink your wording?? Why not say Christianity is one of the main reasons people don't kill each other???

Yes, religion as one of the main reasons why people kill each other. There are other main reasons, I did not say that 75% (aka overwhelming part of the reasoning for kliing someone) but one of the main reasons. Other main reasons are due to dictatorial reasons (aka dictators trying to remain in power or gain power). And there are more reasons (like squabbles between countries other than religion).

And who says there is a reason why people do not kill each other, that is just ridiculous to state something like that.

why, don't you have a reason not to kill others?? Don't you wish others did too?? don't you start your children off at a very young age learning not to harm others???

Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792]

Yes, religion as one of the main reasons why people kill each other. .

don't know why you say that when Christianity says thou shalt not kill????????????

Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792]

Then there is the Book of Revelation which has some rather interesting means of slaughtering folks.

You read all of Revelation and you just might think the author had found some really potent mushrooms. Unless, of course, you have had the words 'explained' to you by a True Believer who will tell you that you can only understand the 'true' meaning of the words once you have accepted Jesus as your saviour. It is a rather gnostic path to comprehension, you must have that special understanding before you can understand the words.

You show one page, but there are loads of pages/verses in which whole scores of people get wiped out.

And I do not blame religion itself, religion itself does not do this or that. It is the way the books are interpreted and more importantly how church leaders explain or act on those books/verses.

Like how the bible never stated that people should be tortured to make them confess and then put to death for made up crimes against the church. Because that is the issue for me, it was the church leaders who misused/used the words of the bible to justify their use of extreme violence.

And most Christians are totally peaceful and would never commit crimes against the lives of people, but in the past, people misused/used religion to justify things that really have no justification.

Like the IRA, the UDF, like Muslim Terrorists, like Christians bombing and killing doctors who happen to perform abortions, etc. etc. etc. etc. And while the religion is not who is doing the killing, it is people claiming to commit these crimes based on their book of faith and other people defending those crimes because of their religion. In other words they justify their crimes on their book of faith, and that is a human foible, not the fault of the religious text itself.

The problem is that there are fundamentalists who claim the words of their book of faith have to be taken literally word for word and they act accordingly (with all the violence/terror that comes from the unfiltered reality of those texts) and then there are people like Huub Oosterhuis who spoke at the funeral of Prince Claus of the Netherlands and was so earnest in how he believes his religion. He has said that the bible is a book of stories meant to teach Christians how to act and not as a law text that has to be taken 100% literally.

Sadly those who commit the worse crimes are the ones who only see what is written on the page of a religious book, but do not think about the meaning of the content or words found later on in their religious books.

Except that is not how the bible works, do you understand that simple fact? The Christian book of faith is not just the new testament but is made up of both old and new.

There are words in there that says "thou shalt not kill" but it is also a and eye for an eye and a life for a life.

And while people are taught not to harm each other, that is just not how it again works, that is just part of reality. And religious leaders have been waging wars and committing crimes for centuries upon centuries and the faithful religious Christians have still done the bidding of their church (with all the bloodshed that comes with it), even if it is in direct contradiction to the teachings of Christ.

That is the disconnect, they are committing atrocities for their religion even if their book of faith says they should not.

is there a law you know of which dictates that both old and new are equally important or 70% 30%????? to Christians or does common sense tell you that new testament is far more important since it created their religion??? Not to mention that Christianity is a living religion created in part while it was apart of the Roman Empire and in part as it emerged from the Roman Empire and in part a reconciliation with Greek philosophy??.

thou shalt not kill does not mean let someone kill you. Is this where you are confused???

if this is true why are you afraid to identify your best example??

People didnt automatically kill everyone they met before Christianity nor did they stop killing once it was invented.

yes they pretty much did. Rome ruled the world and they felt very free to kill and enslave the entire world. Sorry!

Rome did not rule the world and neither killing nor slavery has ended. This is pretty basic history here

The title of this thread is:
Teaching liberals why we have...
by James972
This is but one of the things that gives conservatism a bad name.

Ostensible conservatives, perhaps more correctly, self-proclaimed conservatives presume themselves superior to others.

In our culture, particularly in primary (K - 12) education, teachers are adults, and students are children. It's an intrinsic Superior / Subordinate relationship.
Teaching liberals why we have...
by James972
This insinuates that conservatives have to "teach liberals", condescend to them, patiently & indulgently shepherd them out of their insufferable ignorance.

Ironically, the opposite is more likely to be true. "Liberal" BY DEFINITION means open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded *.
This smug Republican attitude degrades the reputation of conservatism.

What a disgrace!

Read some history books.

Yet in history Christians did a lot of killing. How do you explain that?

It isn't.

Old and new books of fiction.

When did Rome rule China, Asia and North and South America? I must have missed that bit when I was in school.

No, but you cannot ignore they are part of 1 book and not 2 separate religions, they are both part of the one. They both are the portrayal of the one religion.

That is all I am saying. And the same goes for all faiths, some men are so passionate (or intolerant) that they use their book of worship as a justification for attacking someone else, be it verbal or be it physical.

But that says something about the person who does it more than it says something about a religion. There are just as many non-religious zealots who fight about politics but even that is sometimes based on "faith".

Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792]

Nope, I am not confused but that quote is also used as a justification to support the death penalty. And while that person may have killed someone, he did not kill you so it really isn't self defense now is it.

Really? The sexual abuse that went on in the catholic church ring a bell? The inquisition, the witch trials, the crusades, Jihads, the persecution of Jews for centuries, or the wars in Europe between Catholics and Protestants? People used to sacrifice humans to please their gods and their religious leaders. In some parts of Africa albino children are slaughtered due to their local/endemic religious beliefs (some even committed by shamans/witch doctors or however you want to call it).

And this one is not done by the Church leaders but indirectly Christians played their part in the holocaust (the Church did not fight it, it condoned and some say aided in it, also a lot of catholic and protestant Germans and other Europeans carried out the holocaust).

Also we cannot forget the KKK, which was a very much Christian based as that is one of the KKK members swore to uphold (Christian morality and values).

Let us not forget the Christian Crusaders who killed Jews in Europe. Those Jews were no threat to them. The Crusaders were on the way to the Holy Land to kill more people. The first Crusaders had spent a lot of time killing each other and Pope Urban promised them that if they went to the Holy Land and killed Muslims then they would get a get out of hell free card.

Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:

the reason we need a far left thats loud and a far rights that loud is because the common person is hearing this and doesnt perscribe to one side or the other. they base there opionion on either fact or research because we are all connected whether its your phone or computer people look at social media so much that any news or "news" about either party gets highlighted. one day it might be left wing bias and the next right wing bias, so where ever your getting your media from whether that would be cnn or fox or instagram or facebook is pretty much what you perscribe to.

Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792]

Rome ruled much of the Western World and killing and slavery is mostly ended in countries that grew out of the Greco Roman Judeo Christian culture. Without Christianity we'd still be Roman. Christ created love and the individual.
