Re: Teaching liberals why we have religion:[W:792]
Then there is the Book of Revelation which has some rather interesting means of slaughtering folks.
You read all of Revelation and you just might think the author had found some really potent mushrooms. Unless, of course, you have had the words 'explained' to you by a True Believer who will tell you that you can only understand the 'true' meaning of the words once you have accepted Jesus as your saviour. It is a rather gnostic path to comprehension, you must have that special understanding before you can understand the words.
You show one page, but there are loads of pages/verses in which whole scores of people get wiped out.
And I do not blame religion itself, religion itself does not do this or that. It is the way the books are interpreted and more importantly how church leaders explain or act on those books/verses.
Like how the bible never stated that people should be tortured to make them confess and then put to death for made up crimes against the church. Because that is the issue for me, it was the church leaders who misused/used the words of the bible to justify their use of extreme violence.
And most Christians are totally peaceful and would never commit crimes against the lives of people, but in the past, people misused/used religion to justify things that really have no justification.
Like the IRA, the UDF, like Muslim Terrorists, like Christians bombing and killing doctors who happen to perform abortions, etc. etc. etc. etc. And while the religion is not who is doing the killing, it is people claiming to commit these crimes based on their book of faith and other people defending those crimes because of their religion. In other words they justify their crimes on their book of faith, and that is a human foible, not the fault of the religious text itself.
The problem is that there are fundamentalists who claim the words of their book of faith have to be taken literally word for word and they act accordingly (with all the violence/terror that comes from the unfiltered reality of those texts) and then there are people like Huub Oosterhuis who spoke at the funeral of Prince Claus of the Netherlands and was so earnest in how he believes his religion. He has said that the bible is a book of stories meant to teach Christians how to act and not as a law text that has to be taken 100% literally.
Sadly those who commit the worse crimes are the ones who only see what is written on the page of a religious book, but do not think about the meaning of the content or words found later on in their religious books.
