Asia Bibi, 50, was set to have her final appeal against her death sentence for speaking to a Muslim heard today by Pakistan's Supreme Court. Mrs Bibi has been on death row in Punjab since she was accused of blasphemy for getting into a disagreement with a Muslim woman seven years ago.

The two women were working in a field when the Muslim woman refused water from Mrs Bibi from the well on the grounds it was unclean because it had been handled by a Christian. But Mrs Bibi defended herself, saying Jesus would have had a different view on the situation.

Her lawyer, Khalil Tahir Sindhu, said: "She has not seen the sun or the moon this year."

Mr Sindhu said despite the death sentence Ms Bibi has resisted multiple attempts to convert to Islam while she has been incarcerated.

She is likely to be hanged within 30 days of the verdict if her last appeal fails.

While we accept people from all faiths here in the west, it's important to remember that people in other parts of the world are still being killed for their faith. This woman has 2 children, and is likely going to be hung soon for a simple argument that she had. Pakistan embraces Sharia Law, which makes any criticism of the prophet Muhammad a potential death d sentence.

Fight the power! Authoritarian theocrats are ****ing scum!

Accept...Some of us do, yes.

Blasphemy law in Pakistan is beyond heinous and this is far from an isolated incident. It's disgusting, that poor woman.

Members of minority groups are targeted (as evidenced by the above OP) along with Muslims who constitute a majority of those prosecuted.

We do not kill the religious here. We are humane and only prosecute and take their jobs away.

Some far-right evangelical Christians in the USA would like to get the U.S. government off of Wall Street's back and into every American bedroom controlling every American's private life. That's not going to happen. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever.

Wait and see.

The usual reflexive defenders of Islam on DP have yet to chime in here. Hmmmm, I wonder why. Could it be that this is a perfect example of the real Islam we've been talking about? This is not an easily dismissed bunch of illiterate villagers beating someone to death over some imagined slight as occasionally happens, but an Islamic government of a very large Muslim country invoking the death penalty for the "crime" of speaking ill of a mass murderer and rapist revered by over 1.5 billion people. THIS is Islam. If it weren't, the population of Pakistan would not stand for it. THIS is your "peaceful vast majority" about to revel in the "righteous" death of an infidel.

And that is related to the OP in which way???

Golly! Really?

What about all those other Muslim countries where Sharia isn't the law? Are they not Muslim enough for you?

Pakistan would've had a chance at becoming a thriving secular democracy if the west and Russia hadn't interfered and played geopolitics with the region.

It always comes back to us.

At this point, anytime I see sub-human extremists running a country I assume that it's somehow related to something we've done.

Another example for why religion and government should be separate.

That law is Islams, Pakistan just enforces it.

WTF are you talking about.

Moron.

The USA has been at the forefront of religious freedom for its entire existence.

It was. That no longer is as true as it was.

Previously addressed.

I guess I gotta just write your name in the "Out of Touch with Reality" column and leave it at that. Bye.

Don't be silly. That's all rather obvious. You say, you don't even see it? That's interesting.

If she gets executed, the US should

- refuse any and all spare parts for Pakistani F-16s, C-130s etc.
- close the US embassy and terminate diplomatic relations
- ban Pakistani airlines from landing here
- refuse to sell their airlines Boeing spares
- refuse any ships originating in Pakistan

But.... I don't that will come to pass.

What part of this story confuses you? Pakistan applies Sharia to all citizens. Sharia demands death to those who transgress to the point of open blasphemy. This is Islam defining itself for all to see. Really, what part of that do you not understand?

That all countries with sizeable Muslim populations do not adhere to the same degree as Pakistan changes nothing.

I assume Western feminists and progressives are demonstrating against this, but I haven't seen any stories yet. Does anyone have a link to where the demonstrations are happening? I'm on vacation in London at the moment, and I would think a picket in front of the Pakistan embassy would be a great place to start.

Why not ask the locals there? If not you could always organise your own and encourage support. Just a thought of course.

We had one here a week ago at Parliament House and shortly after a signed petition was presented to the Pakistani Consulate.

No, the liberal element is obsessed with skeletons in the closet. The homosexuals will try to discover past indiscretions of others to uplift themselves. Liberal politicians are quick to point their fingers at others who only do what the liberals say is okay ---- Why? To promote themselves.

If anything, Christians as a whole are very discrete with regard to the problems of others. We are not about mud slinging. Christians rather deal with an individual one on one without fanfare. Liberals don't want Christians discussing the sin of homosexuality in their homes and telling their children, friends and visitors how wrong and evil it is. Liberals believe such talk is undermining freedom, all the while they limit what, where and with whom people can hold such discussions.

Do you believe Christians ended tobacco smoking in theaters, stores, malls, planes, buses, parks, and end advertisements etc..? For over 200 years Christians merely asked smokers to not smoke in their homes. The liberals felt they needed to save the world, environment, etc... Liberals are rabid, while Christians try to lead through example.

Whoa! Look out some serious nonsense.

I truly pity this comment.
Not surprising the mentality is still alive, amplified by the tea party.

Give us a frickin' break here.Christians put an end to witchcraft by burning witches at the stake.

If every Christian in the USA had fought against anti-smoking laws they might not have passed.

Why would you mock people for protesting and speaking out against such heinous treatment of Asia Bibi and countless others?

I would like to mock the way they do it. All talk and no action means 0.
