Report: Bride, 13, dies of genital bleeding - Mideast/N. Africa - msnbc.com

In September, a 12-year-old Yemeni child-bride died after struggling for three days in labor to give birth, a local human rights organization said.

Yemen once set 15 as the minimum age for marriage, but parliament annulled that law in the 1990s, saying parents should decide when a daughter marries.

What exactly does this have to do with Islam? Child marriage used to be common everywhere, and is still allowed in countries with a variety of different religions. Conversely, plenty of Islamic countries don't allow children getting married either. Hell, you can still get legally married at age 13 in the U.S. I consider it a deplorable practice, but poor medical care was still the likely cause of this poor girls death.

you should read about other cultures a bit more before lashing out blindly.

This isn't really 'radical Islam', but rather culture.

In Japan, the age of consent is 13. In Mexico, it is 12. A lot of the Islamic countries substitute age of consent with marriage.

all religion is barbaric. being fundamentally irrational, religion can provide the rationale for any behavior at all.

burn 'heretics', perform genital surgery on infants, forced celibacy, cultural genocide, mass murder, war, terrorism... take your pick.

no religion is barbaric. being fundamentally irrational, it cannot provide a rationale for anything. that some ascribe their behavior to a religion is not defining of the religion.

toss a coin,

geo.

I didn't know there were places in the US where it was still so young, though I knew there were until the 70's.

In Spain it is only 13 as well and in quite a lot of East European countries 14. Some European countries it is 15 but a quick look and around the world 16 seems to be the most usual.

I agree some other problem and poor medical care seems to be the reason for this girl's death.

Females dying in child birth is nothing new. On the same day that the story was written, I'm sure adult women in the same regions died in child birth.

I'm not saying I agree with children so young being made to be brides and have children, but this is definitely a cultural phenomenon and not a religious one. In the grand scheme, it wasn't too long ago that Europe had the same practice. The same practices can be found in India. To say Islam is to blame is just vitriolic bigotry. The age of consent varies in different Middle Eastern countries, all of whom have Muslims.

It even happens in America!

" -- Deaths from pregnancy and childbirth in the United States have doubled in the past 20 years, a development that a human rights group called "scandalous and disgraceful" Friday.
In addition, the rights group said, about 1.7 million women a year, one-third of pregnant women in the United States, suffer from pregnancy-related complications.
Most of the deaths and complications occur among minorities and women living in poverty, it noted. ... "
