Bay Area feels the impact of the Japan tsunami

Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday declared a state of emergency for Del Norte, Humboldt, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties after the tsunami hit the California coast, causing damage to ports, harbors, public and private property and forcing residents to flee.
As of late Friday, the worst was over for Northern California, said Daniel McNamara, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Only one death in the US. Boats were sunk from Oregon to Southern California, piers and docks were destroyed in many places, a few areas suffered power blackouts, coastal roads were inundated, and the damage is estimated to be in the tens of millions.

This is not any worse than an outbreak of severe thunderstorms, which, is frequently experienced from Texas to Michigan. It could have been worse, but it wasn't. Not so for Japan, where the death count is going to number in many thousands, where emergencies exist at 5 nuclear power plants, where small communities have been swept away, and in which the toll of suffering is going to be revealed in the next few days as massive.

For all of us in the US, let us be thankful that this wasn't as bad as it could have been, but let us all keep the Japanese in our hearts, and in our minds, willing to lend a hand to those there who need it. May God bless them and comfort them.

I believe the reports are that there is one confirmed dead and at least three missing in California.

The damage in California is in the millions and the Tsunami was less than 10 feet here.

What I fear is the possible melt downs because they will effect our West Coast and cause untold damage and deaths.
