Russia considers bill calling German unification 'annexation'

Jan. 28, 2015

MOSCOW, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The Russian parliament is considering a denunciation of Germany's 1990 unification as an illegal territorial grab of East Germany by West Germany. The move is an attempt to justify Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. The bill was put forth by Communist Party legislator Nikolai Ivanov. Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, a crucial party in Germany's unification, was critical of Ivanov's legislation, telling Russia's Interfax news agency the idea was "rubbish."

Rubbish and... bizarre. Will Russia now "liberate" the former East Germany? As German Chancellor Angela Merkel quipped in March 2014; "Vladimir Putin seems to be living on another world."

The problem with these things is that it is often as here a question of interests and perspective. As wrong headed as I might think the Russian standpoint to be, it is their standpoint and the have the power and willingness to make thing unpleasant.

All things considered it is pretty meaningless. Whatever relations that Germany and Russia has working Putin and his crew have gone a long way in destroying, this has zero chance of being anything but Russia making noise for the sake of making noise.

Putins not so much 'living in another world' as he is living in another time. This guy is a dangerous Cold War relic that we continue to ignore or dismiss at our collective peril

Putin is wandering deeper into Crazytown.
