Who won the first GOP Presidential Debate?

Who won the debate?

Cain helped himself the most, which is obvious by the amount of internet buzz he is getting.

Dr. Paul gets the consolation prize for continuing his education style method of not deflecting the questions that they use to marginalize him. Maybe someday he will come to understand two minutes is not enough time to lay out a cohesive philosophy for why the federal government should have no involvement in heroine issues, but I doubt it. Even so, he alone is a great reason to tune in for these super early debates, it's great tv for people that love political debate.

The biggest losers had to be Gary Johnson and Rick Santorum. I would include Pawlenty as well because maybe it was just me, but he had to of bore the audience to death but Fox is doing their best to try to pump him up making it a wash.

Herman Cain hasn't a chance in Hell of winning the Republican nomination for president. Don't kid yourself those people in the focus group were simply saying they would vote for a black man - nothing more. None of the people you saw last night will be the Republican nominee. Trust me.

Do you EVER stop talking about race? Good Lord. You can't seem to see past anyone's color.

By the way, you voted for Gary Johnson.......Glenn Beck liked him too so you both would've voted for the same person! *grin*

The focus group of Republicans from SC seem to disagree with you.

I don't think the abortion thing is a big deal. It's not like if he gets elected he'll be able to make abortions for incest and rape illegal. That would have to go through the courts who would never allow it. So it's really a non-issue.

I was talking in terms of the general not the primaries. He would play much better among republicans. I cannot really comment on how he did with republicans since I am not one.

I would check the Democrats, but it was not on the list. If those are the candidates the GOP is bringing to the table, I think I can call who is walking away with the win in 2012.

This has to be one of the saddest comments I have ever seen here at DP. You know exactly jack **** about the motivations of the people in the focus group, and not everything is about race. Your fixation on race says more about you than it does about any one else.

The whole who won or lost a debate thing is silly. There is no uniform way to determine winners or losers, either what they said resonated with you or it didn't. It is wide open to confirmation bias and is completely subjective and will vary from person to person.

Basically the question boils down to "Who said what you wanted to hear best?"

Who says what you want to hear is always who people say won the debate lol

It was on tonight on Fox News. The candidates were Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum and Gary Johnson.

If you watched, who do you think won?

Sorry, I was watching The Biggest Loser. Oh no, wait a sec! It was the debate I was watching...

Who won the debate?

Obama.

Ron Paul is the reason I became a Libertarian briefly in the '90's. Either that or it was the brand of hash I was using that night, but nontheless, even though I disagree with his politics I continue to have great respect for him. And that IS NOT the hash talking!

I'm counting the Ron Paul votes as 1. Why on earth are non-members allowed to vote?

The way you set up the poll we can see who members voted for. If you want to you can check legit votes that way.

I thought DP was a place where opinions are expressed. There have been many here and in the right wing who have accused those who voted for Barack Obama for the very same reason -White Guilt is what it called.

Thinking about it some more... Frank Luntz is the one who made them vote the was they did. During the debate, he used body language - none verbal skills to influnce the so-called focus group. I don't know that is fact, that's an opinion I've always had about his televised focus groups.

Here's a review.

Excerpted from “Fox News' GOP Debate Debacle” by Matt Latimer, The Daily Beast, May 6, 2011 | 12:25am
The main problem with last night’s GOP debate is that most of the diehard political junkies in Washington—yours truly among them—had to be reminded that it was even taking place. The many, many voters who missed this clash of “Governor Tim Pawlenty and the also-rans” can continue their lives without a care.

The real loser of tonight’s South Carolina encounter is Fox News Channel. What on earth possessed the network to host this asterisk-in-the making? Fox wasted airfare, production costs, and the time of some of their marquee names—Chris Wallace, Juan Williams, and Bret Baier—who asked questions of a bunch of also-rans without even pretending to listen to their answers. The first clue this debate was a disaster was when the moderators began to ask the placeholders on stage about candidates who weren’t even there: Mitt Rom-bot, Trump, Daniels, Huckabee, Bachmann, Gingrich, and Trump, again.

Ironically for a network accused of right-wing bias, Fox may have done the Republican Party a monumental disservice. In the midst of one of the Obama administration’s greatest achievements—the killing of Osama bin Laden—the network made the Republican presidential primary look like a low-budget Star Trek convention, where only the guy who played Dr. McCoy and a bunch of extras bothered to show up. And the network’s overuse of a loud, annoying Price Is Right bell to cut candidates off in mid-sentence only added to the aura that this affair was a tawdry game show waiting for someone to mercifully hit a gong. …

What !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pbrauer we have a BLACK PRESIDENT who was elected by whites..why wouldnt herman cain have a chance???? There are MANY white people I know talking about herman cain and how much they think of him...I havent hear not ONE derogatory comment about his race.

Cain

Johnson killed any chance he had. Seems like a friendly guy though.

The poll results without the guests....

Ron Paul - 2
Herman Cain - 8
Tim Pawlenty - 0
Gary Johnson - 1
Rick Santorum - 1

Herman Cain took the show to me... i will vote for him in the primary if he keeps this up

Pawlenty reminds me of a cross between Kerry and Edwards. Not good.

I can't find a site with the full video. I've only seen the first ten minutes. Of that, Pawlenty came off the best. He started pretty strong with the talking point though (which I dislike). I didn't really expect that of someone who isn't really a well-established political figure. Ron Paul also did fine in the part I saw. Santorum probably appealed to best to the hardcore right. Not my type. Cain was just plain bad in the ten minutes I saw. Gary Johnson (who?)

Yes. He strikes me as stilted and artificial. And his answer to almost everything was to blame Democratic failure. I've already got every reason I'll ever need to vote against the Democrats, but Pawlenty didn't give me a single reason to vote for him.

Ron Paul always does fine. He's a man who knows what he believes in and doesn't float whichever way the wind blows. I admire him, and if I weren't so adamantly opposed to what he believes in, I'd support him.

When I watched the whole video, Cain was easily my favorite, followed by Santorum. I don't care for their "family values", but that is a flaw I have learned to accept from Republicans.

Vote libertarian, its the only way to force the repubs to change.

You seem to think that I want the Republicans to be more like the Libertarians. If I wanted Libertarians in office, I would vote for them.
