A yearlong sting operation, including aliases, a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and surreptitious purchases from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania, culminated in the federal government announcing this week that it has gone to court to stop Rainbow Acres Farm from selling its contraband to willing customers in the Washington area.

The product in question: unpasteurized milk.

It’s a battle that’s been going on behind the scenes for years, with natural foods advocates arguing that raw milk, as it’s also known, is healthier than the pasteurized product, while the Food and Drug Administration says raw milk can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria.

“It is the FDA’s position that raw milk should never be consumed,” said Tamara N. Ward, spokeswoman for the FDA, whose investigators have been looking into Rainbow Acres for months, and who finally last week filed a 10-page complaint in federal court in Pennsylvania seeking an order to stop the farm from shipping across state lines any more raw milk or dairy products made from it.

The farm’s owner, Dan Allgyer, didn’t respond to a message seeking comment, but his customers in the District of Columbia and Maryland were furious at what they said was government overreach.

“I look at this as the FDA is in cahoots with the large milk producers,” said Karin Edgett, a D.C. resident who buys directly from Rainbow Acres. “I don’t want the FDA and my tax dollars to go to shut down a farm that hasn’t had any complaints against it. They’re producing good food, and the consumers are extremely happy with it.”

Yes, it's from here:

Amish Busted Over Milk

Yep, your reading this right. The Obama Administration (Love to see someone blame this mess on George W.) has spent our tax dollars on a year long investigation to bust an Amish Farmer for selling Unpastuerized milk to people who want it. What the Flamers?

Now, with gasoline in NE Ohio at $4.15 a gallon, a $14 Trillion dollar deficit, 3 wars currently going on, 10% + unemployment and a myriad of other issues, Obama this week has chosen to accomplish the following this:

1. Show us his Long Form Birth Certificate
2. Bust an Amish Farmer for selling a natural product that is sold in grocery stores in every town across the nation. The only difference being, he didn't pastuerize his.
3. To spend $200K to fly an Astronauts wife to a space shuttle launching by sending her a private Air Force Jet. Yeah, that happened this week.

So, is this really conscientious use of our tax dollars?

It's pitiful but he is one of those dangerous religious fanatics.

When my kids were little we bought raw milk and made butter and cheese. Not any more. Federal offense.

Is there no end to the nanny state?

absolutely not, as long as the guy wasn't trying to pass it off as pasteurized and lieing.

Is it illegal to sell non-pasteurized milk? If so, then yes. If not, then no.

Also I have no idea why anyone would want to drink un-pasteurized milk anyway.

White House Schedule | The White House

I could not find any specific info at the White House schedule confirming this.

If it is illegal... i think that would be ridiculous, but yea you got to enforce the law.

Silly buggers should leave the Amish alone. I mean it is bad enough they can't use buttons or zippers or the phone, without getting busted for selling illegal MILK.

Yeah, this is a good use of our govenrmental resources. Gotta keep those Amish in line, and it is safer than trying to take down Mexican drug cartels...

It is illegal, however like bootleg alcohol, people still buy and sell it anyway.

The problem mainly lies with mass produced unpasteurized milk.
Cow need their utters cleaned and sometimes **** drops in the milk during "milking" so pasteurization is the method of removing those harmful bacteria.

If one is careful and makes sure to uphold sanitary conditions, unpasteurized milk is fine.

In other news, millions of illegal aliens are stealing money out of citizens' pockets. I guess we'll just let that slide.

Your poll answers are not surprisingly slanted. The correct answer to my mind is "upholding the laws of the US is a good use of our tax dollars".

Your right, upholding the laws of the US is a good use of tax dollars. So, with that in mind:

1. Why is the Administration not upholding the laws on price fixing when it comes to oil? 1 year ago Diesel was $1.00 more than Gasoline approximately. Today it is within $.10 of gasoline, in some places, it is less. Now if they come from the same oil & trucks have to use it to run, along with locomotives and so on, why is it suddenly basically the same price as gas. Gas has gone from $2.00 a gallon a little over a year ago to over $4.00 a gallon, that's almost a 100% climb in one year.

When 9/11 happened and the market went nuts, the feds shut down the market to protect people, they threatened prosecution for anyone attempting price gouging at the pumps and so on. Why isn't that being done today? Oh yeah, Barry's buddies are makin' a killin' out of oil right now.

In July 2008 when it went over $4.00 a gallon GW got it back down within a week. Will Barry?

2. Illegal Immigration is a crime. What is Barry Hussein Osama doing about that?

3. Pastuerized Milk is NOT a federal issue, it's a state issue. In 10 states it is legal to sell it unpastuerized.

4. Cops turn their eye all the time to little stuff, are you going to tell me that this milk is a big issue? Come on. It's harmless, how in the world did the human race ever exist prior to pastuerization? We friggin' won WWI & II on unpastuerized milk.

Here's the thing. It's illegal to sell unpasteurized milk. The FDA is responsible for upholding that law. Yes, it's a stupid law, and yes, it should be changed, but until it is, it needs to be upheld. End of story.

If it is illegal... i think that would be ridiculous, but yea you got to enforce the law.

A few posters expressed this view. Haven't any of you ever seen those labels on pillows, mattresses, etc., that say, "Don't Remove Under Penalty of Law"? How about listening to a booktleg CD? Isn't that a felony? In my state, driving your car out of state on vacation without permission from whoever has title while you're making payments is a felony. Off to the big house. How about ordering stuff off the internet and not contacting the state, excuse me, The State to pay your sales tax? I remember fondling when I had a low spot in my yard that collected rain and bred mosquitoes. I brought in a truckload of dirt and filled it in. Now, that's a felony. It's wetland. Has to be preserved even if it's in my yard. I even, gasp, I know, forced a protected skunk to move from under my house.

Get real. Laws have nothing to do with right and wrong. Enforcing all the laws vigorously is one of the most evil things the police can do and would bring the entire system to a standstill.
