I think you can find general public record regarding county, state, and federal prisoners who were wrongfully detained or convicted based on "wrong place, wrong time" situations or unreliable witness testimony. Not saying that Gitmo has been a pillar of fair treatment, but there are plenty of n'er do-wells shacked up there that I don't want anywhere near impressionable prisoners here in the states who are already being conditioned for lives of continued crime in the "pen".

I highly doubt that there is such a high rate of unfair incarcerations in any other US prison.

I think "unfair" is relative to the situation. I suspect that what I would consider "fair" or "appropriate" would differ greatly from what you would classify in a similar manner.

Gitmo most likely isn't getting closed anytime soon. At least not for another year.

I personally think that it should stay open til at least someone comes up with a better idea of keeping prisoners of war and suspected, non-US citizen terrorists.

As for alleged abuse, I would say that we should probably ensure that the information is accurate and deal with the situation the best we can.

Gitmo's a damn sight better than bringing accused terrorists to the US.

Edit: Besides, I skimmed one of the links above (the middle one) and didn't see anything particularly shocking, especially since the article is putting it's own spin on what it all means instead of letting folks figure it out for themselves.

So what are the definitions then? To get this straight. Cause I'd like to make sure innocent folk aren't really confined to Gitmo. But there's lots of misinformation out there, people saying that they're all picked up on the "battlefield", things of that nature. Turns out not to be really true. When you offer a high bounty on information and whereabouts of terrorists; it turns out you find a lot of "terrorists". Not so much because they're all actually terrorists, but more because folk like the money and given enough cash, people will sell out their neighbors for whatever you say.

In the end, the very questionable circumstances which surround Gitmo and the people incarcerated within really raise a lot of doubts and concerns over what it is that our government is really doing. It's ok to question, it's ok to wonder. We don't need to accept everything on the blind faith of the government that the government is doing nothing wrong.

I'd love Gitmo to be closed ASAP. Won't happen, but I'd love it.

I thought that place was supposed to be closed if early 2009. What happened to that plan?

.

The legal/detention issue is the only problem i could ever see barring that craphole from being closed. There will be ghosts there.

The base?? or the prison?? We should keep the base open as long as it's a stick up the Castros' asses.

Seems like comparatively mild stuff. These are the most damaging documents they could release? Is your concern that there are still detainees at Gitmo or that Gitmo is still open? This could happen at Thomson, too, without the added security risks to the people of Illinois.

Gitmo should be closed. All detainee's need to be charged with a crime or released. The backlash is probably going to hurt, but that is consequence of making such a stupid mistake. Waffling about is only going to make it worse in the end.

No. Keep it open. It's a fine advanced naval base irritating Cuba's communist leaders.

The Mayor has heard rumors that some people are recommending that so-called pirates be sent to Gitmo for trial. That's baloney. Haul captured living pirates to the task force flagship and put them in front a tribunal there. Then hang them, since the evidence of their guilt is overwhelming. Dump their bodies over the side, because sharks are becoming threatened and they gotta two, same as the worms and the birds.

Since when did they give a ****?

I say **** when im tired.

We should do the opposite and expand Gitmo. We should put more prisoners there. I think we should also send a case of pink panties and disposable cameras, so the prisoners can write home to mom.

Gitmo does it's job very well. Keep it open.

change you can choke on set in.

also, not sure how many other Countries felt like Australia when the US administration tried to offload some of the Gitmo detainees to them when they were talking of closing it down. Aus told them to take responsibility and clean up their own freaking mess. in a nicer way of course, but the answer was no.

Keeping random people locked away with no hope of every getting a fair trial and getting out? Yeah, I suppose it does that quite well.

yeah, they just went around the ME and "randomly" picked up every 10th guy with a towel on his head and sent them to GITMO.

poor poor Obama, another promise broken. all big and bad going to close GITMO and nearly 3 years later it is still up and running and we are still sending National Guard troops down to man the craphole. I say open the freaking gates and let the inmates loose in Cuba. a little payback for all the criminals Castro has sent our way over the decades.
