There are a lot of generalizations here on DP, and generally in politics. Common ones are, "liberals hate (insert constitutional right/upper tax bracket)" or "conservatives hate (insert minority/equality)".

Whenever I see one, I tend to get pissed, because its sheer ignorance, stupidity, and in my opinion, quite frequently nothing more than derogatory.

How do you guys feel about this crap?

EDIT: This is public, don't be a hypocrit and vote you hate them, and then use them.

I feel that you shouldn't lump all generalizations into the same category.

I meant specifically the negative generalizations.

ohh? I dislike many generalizations that are "positive" as well, they are equally sloppy and error prone.

And I think my deadpan delivery made the joke soar right past your head.

I got it, I'm just not in the mood for humor.

For me, in casual normal conversation i enjoy them, but when it's serious/ in a debate i extremely dislike.

It depends on what kind of context they are being used in.

Sometimes people use them to be offensive or to flame/bait/troll. There are other times in debate when generalization is warranted.

Generalizations are the easiest way to make yourself look like a dumbass.

Those are what I'm talking about, the "negative generalizations"

Dumbest generalizations:

1) Republicans are racist (or hate Obama because he's black)
2) Liberals hate the military
3) Conservatives love the military more than liberals
4) Conservatives just love to bow down to the corporate God; corporations and businesses are evil.
5) Liberals hate America/want it to be weak
6) Liberals love terrorists more than they love America.
7) Unions are the root of all evil.

Anyone else care to add...

Libertarians are against generalizations...in general.

How about . . . . .

8) Independants are just other labels for (Liberals, Conservative, Dumb, Have-No-Polictal-Belief,etc).

You didn't have a poll option for how I feel about them. At least not one that I think is close enough.

Personally I hate generalizations and try to be specific as much as possible. However I also realize that there are occasions where generalizing is acceptable.

For instance when talking about history. I feel that it is acceptable to talk about how the Spartans often had homosexual intercourse, even though I'm quite sure that there had to at least be ONE that never did. (more than likely even more) Or that Egyptians built the pyramids. Even though I am sure that the Pharoh never once pulled pulled one of them rocks.

On the flip side I hate it when people generalize things like legal and illegal immigration and just say "immigrant/s". Or when someone says that whites/blacks are racist. Not everyone is racist despite what some people here like to claim. (and I would challenge anyone to prove that I am racist in another thread if you think that I am lying) And yes I hate it when people generalize republicans/democrats etc etc.

Also what I found ironic about your poll choices is that they too are generalizations.

8) Libertarians are really just secret gay communists who want America to fail.

Personally I hate everyone so that works for me.

haha this is some funny ****.

Kind of like them, kind of dislike them.

It depends on how broadly it applies in reality. If it's true ≥95% or so of the time, they're fine, especially in casual conversation. If it's true ≥99% of the time, I may even be a little pissed if you waste my time and call out insignificant exceptions (depending on the context, of course). "Conservatives are racist" and "liberals are commies" and "libertarians are insane"? I don't think so. (I actually love that brand of generalizations, in a way, because they provide me an opportunity to laugh at the author/speaker's blatant stupidity.)
