State Supreme Court Justice David Prosser beat challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg by 7,316 votes, or less than half of one percent — slim enough to allow a Kloppenburg to request a free statewide recount.

Kloppenburg's campaign was considering the move, saying they had until 5 p.m. Wednesday to decide.

The recount would cost taxpayers about $1 million. Statistical probability of overturning that kind of lead: nil.

Your vote in the poll -- and your thoughts behind it. Thanks!

Less than one half of one percent...damn right I would if it was me.

Absolutely, They may descrepencies, that puts her ahead.

The circumstances are fairly suspicious. Not sure a recount would favor her, given the current situation, but it should darn sure be done.

love that avatar!!!

That close should be recounted, it's important to get it right.

it would seem so, based on your own (and your handle). my boyfriend's sister went to Florida and the only thing I wanted was a picture of the baby sea turtles scampering into the ocean. She was told it would be impossible, but on her last day there she found 1 little guy hustlin' his way to the water line and managed to snap a few pictures for me. I couldn't find any cute sea turtle pictures, so I thought this little guy would suffice.

From the article, it appears the decision is basically whether Kloppenburg & crew think a 7k+ count against them is possible to overcome with a recount – those kind of numbers would seem to be a serious miscounting error, I would think – but perhaps I am wrong.

Was there some controversy over this election previously?

I have this nagging feeling there was, and I forgot about it already…

They supposedly found an "error in counting" in one county that resulted in an additional 7500 votes in favor of the incumbent.

When I thought Kloppenburg was going to win by a small margin I thought there should be a recount. However, this margin is wider than I thought would be the case, either way. I am not sure about it. I guess I don't have on opinion other than that I think Kloppenburg should decide, just as the law allows for.

Oh. Well that sheds a bit more light on the subject. Perhaps there were other errors of that magnitude. Kloppenburg should ask for a recount.

I note you use the word "supposedly"...

But yes, that does jive somewhat with what I recall now...

I also recall hearing that the supposed error was not actually such...or am I mistaken?

I'd be lying if I said I knew anything else about it, to be honest. It just seemed convenient that 7500 votes somehow got missed. I also heard something about the election official being a little shady...something about record-setting voter turn-out after her being selected for the position.

Well I did a google search on Kloppenburg...

Came up with an article from April 6, 2011, 4:13PM about her declaring victory, based on an AP count of 100% of the polls, with a margin of victory being 204 votes.
Kloppenburg Declares Victory In Wisconsin Supreme Court Race | TPMDC

Also came up with an article from 04/15/11 @06:24 PM ET that has Prosser winning by a margin of 7,316 votes.
David Prosser Projected Winner, JoAnne Kloppenburg Defeated In Wisconsin Supreme Court Election

:thinking
Unsure how accurate those articles are, but apparently some 7,520 votes for Prosser showed up in that 9-day period - perhaps whatever mix-up led to that is what I heard about...

Edit: Ahh, I haz found more infos on teh interwebz.

A collection of stories on the matter:
