Tomorrow France's Burqa Ban law goes into effect, would you be in favor of a similar law here in the United States?

Debate as France readies burqa ban - UPI.com

Instead of Burquas can we legalize gags for people who talk but say nothing.

Im for banning the burqa, imagine that. Then we ban the mosque.

when innocent Muslim-Americans like Imam Rauf and his wife Daisy Khan try to build an interfaith community center to promote religious tolerance and unity two blocks from Ground Zero, that is supposedly a slap in the face to the victims of 9-11. however, selling 60 billion dollars worth of weapons to the Saudis, the country where 15 of the 19 actual 9-11 hijackers were from is ok apparently and it barely causes a murmur.

Tomorrow France's Burqa Ban law goes into effect, would you be in favor of a similar law --

Not anywhere and not in France. The cherished phrase "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" must now be changed to "égalité et fraternité" as liberty has just been removed in the foolish idea that this law would protect any of the 2000 burka wearers that may be being beaten at home in France right now.

Probably not at this time. In this country, we have very few women who do wear a burka of their own free will and I don't care if they do. Now if those women are in an abuse relationship and they are made to, that's a different story. Lastly, we don't need to give the extremists another reason to point at this country and declare it anti-islamic, creating more potential for violence for a cause that really accomplishes nothing.

That certainly would be unconstitutional.

Perhaps byt it would be fun. Then we can send the appeal to the 9th curcuit, who knows that those wackos will agree to.

Rather like the previous poster, you seem to think it's so easy for the battered wife to just take herself down to the police station. Many non muslim battered women have difficulty doing it - add the constraints of living in such a close knit community with very rigid ideas.

So you've already stated that non-muslim women get battered. Which proves that banning the burka won't stop domestic violence, since domestic violence happens even against women who don't wear the burka.

So all of this is just a smokescreen for the issues involved. If domestic violence really is a major issue for these women, then why not instead have the French government pass laws that make reporting of domestic violence easier, pass laws that provides for protections against women who suffer domestic violence, pass laws that allow the French government to relocate and pay for occupational training of domestic violence sufferers, or any number of other laws that would be more effective than banning a type of clothing.

I'm not against the ban because I don't want to stop domestic violence. I just think that banning the burka won't do anything to stop domestic violence.

Banning the burka to stop domestic violence is like banning bikinis to prevent rape.

I would oppose a law banning burqas in The United States.

However, I totally oppose allowing Muslim women wearing a burqa in their driver's license photos. Allowing that is completely idiotic.

Like it's ever going to happen...

Mind you, joking aside - if you ever look at all the images on the web of a burka clad woman driver licence - it's always the same woman... er I mean picture! :lamo

A very black and white answer for a very black and white world in which we don't live.

Your answer would be fine if every woman under a burqa were wearing one out of free choice, but they're not. Many are under a burqa because of force, or fear of the consequences if they don't tow the line. Many live in communities where rejection by family and community would be too hard to bear, hence they do as they feel they should so as not to be cast out, stigmatised or punished. Yes there will always be some exceptoin to the rule the Sunday papers who says she loves living under a curtain and she chose it, but they're far from the majority. Let's cut this crap that most burqua wearing women are free thinking feminists who've chosen to live covered - that argument sinks like a stone. And let's be frank about what wanting to keep wives and daughters under such subjugation really says about how much you value women as equals. Certain civil freedoms quite rightly take priority over a supposed religious freedom such as this one.

Doubtless as ever on DP, the usual French bashers, relying on Fox news and having never set foot on French soil, will crawl out of the woodwork here. All I can say is that as somebody who isn't French but lives in France, most women and most muslims (of both sexes) here welcome this ban. A few mullahs will scream injustice, but they're not representative of the majority.

Oh I get it! So we should take away rights from women, got ya!

No consideration is more important than freedom. In America, if you don't like how your community is treating you, a Uhaul costs $20 bucks to rent. And if your religion forbids it, perhaps you should reconsider your life ruining dogma.

Forgive my ignorance...but I am totally serious here. Is that photo ferreal??

Edit: nvm it's obviously a joke lol.

I favour a law that bans Islam completely and any person practicing the religion should be executed in public. It's time the white-man stood up to these sand-n*****s before they are allowed to completely control our society.

No.

Except in circumstances mentioned previously, such as for ID purposes and the like.

Unless a rapid and highly accurate DNA scanner or some other device that servers the same purpose is developed, to the point where police can take a blood sample and compare it to DNA records n(and I don't want to think about how many changes a setup such as that would require, not to mention people who wouldn't agree to such) instead of needing to see a face for comparison to a picture.

Until then, women who keep their faces covered in most cases should be required to show their face for ID purposes, or simply not participate in any actions that would require such.

As I see it, secular law should always trump religious law, in most cases where the two come into conflict.

If not, we might have people legally performing human sacrifice (an extreme example, to be sure, but you get the point).

The fact most people voted yes disgusts me.

What's the matter with you people? Why all the anger towards Arab women, that's what they are, you know, Arabs who happen to have a religion called Muslim. What you're really doing, and you don't even know you're doing it, is regurgitating the long time antagonism between Christians and Arabs, dating back to the first crusade... Didn't realize there were so many avenging Christians out there.

The tea-bagging conservatives must have "participated" heavily in this poll, but with their spamming and stupidity....
That we respect one's religion and freedoms(most of the time) !! is what makes our nation great..

Ok, well I don't feel that way at all. I live in the downtown and people just can't go around that can't be identified in a line up. I would feel completely differently if this was mandated by her religion. It is not.

But I love all the world's beautiful beautiful people. They are all precious miracles.

I think they should try being more American because American girls have more fun.

Just how does one "be more American"?

So 55% say "YES".
Thank goodness that our law-makers (most of them) are smarter than their constituents.

I dig a french bikini on Hawaii island

I saw two coupkes walking to Easter mass. The men were in the front the women in the back. All dressed for church. It was so Norman Rockwell.

Ya try to be more Norman Rockwell to be more American. Or more Beach Boys.

Have you people seen how damn ugly most of these women are? Are you that big of a rights taking con that you want to see these ugly women? I'm sure tho if the question was to ban baggy jeans or witty graphic tees or something else you hate youngsters and others that aren't you do you would want to ban those things also.

Yeah, I don't like those pants on the ground look. It seems people want to look as unemployable as possible. But when they rob me I can identify them in a lineup.

So a woman with a bunch of **** on top of her head is gonna rob you?
