There are numerous reports out on the sudden demand and lack of stock on iodine tablets. Most of this is fed from the video's showing the impact the Chernobyl radioactive fallout cloud had on Eupore.

Are you buying Idodine? I'm in San Diego and don't have plans to try and look for any.

Panic Buying: Stocks Of Potassium Iodide Exhausted In U.S.

A prepared person would already have iodine tablets in stock.

I do, but not for the situation in Japan.

Even though my state is somewhat close to Japan I don't have plans to buy any. If it is confirmed that the reactor has melted down and we start getting reports of radiation coming this way, then we'll see.

Why would you, anyone, want to buy this stuff? Because of the nuclear non-event in Japan? That's funny.

Remember the whole duct tape and plastic sheeting scare?

Worst case scenario... Since Chernobyl was finally contained in a certain area, the same can be done in Japan.

LOL!

You think this could be another Chernobyl ?

That's funny.

Let me guess....you are against nuclear power and love wind/soar?

That's not what he said. He implied that since this is not nearly as bad a Chernobyl that it should be containable.

Please, please, please..... DO NOT take potassium iodide unless you KNOW FOR SURE that you have been exposed to high levels of radiation!! This stuff isn't aspirin!

And for gosh sakes, the radiation levels IN Japan aren't that high, and there is NOT going to be a "radioactive cloud" dropping on the west coast giving people radiation poisoning!!!

That's thousands of frickin' miles, and radioactive particles are HEAVY and do NOT fly very well! The difference in ambient radiation in California/etc will be BARELY MEASUREABLE by the MOST SENSITIVE detectors and will NOT hurt you!

You West Coasties are going to be FINE.

Holy crap.

Or unless you want to kill your thyroid

No. I can get it for free from the military if it is needed.

I hope people won't get greedy and start buying it up and cause a shortage. People who are actually close may need it.

I never heard of this before...

Nope am not buying any.

I have them already in stock with my emergency supplies because I'm within my 'danger zone' for our states nuclear arsenal disarmament facility and a nuclear reactor. . . my state in the last few years have pushed a heafty 'know your safety' thing when it comes to our nuclear facilities and the chance of problems happening - they gave away emergency fallout radios and supplies, etc, and give routine seminars concerning things.

Will I ever need to use them? Hopefully not. It would be great if I never have to open them.

But I have them right along with water-proof lights and hurricane matches - which I have had to access several times (tornados, etc).

There has been a run on them here in Taiwan after our government said there was a ten percent chance of radiation reaching Taiwan. Now, the government is urging people NOT to stockpile on food and iodide. Well, if the government hadn't been stupid and said that there was a ten percent chance (completely bogus) of radiation reaching Taiwan, perhaps people wouldn't be stockpiling... DUMB!!!

Having read "On the Beach" a long time ago, I would spend my money on a plane ticket to Australia and cyanide capsules if there was a serious threat of nuclear fallout.

Currently there is no threat.

Considering that no one in Japan is yet displaying any signs of radiation poisoning, and how there is no evidence of any actual contamination of any soil or water there, I think we're safe. Especially since I'm on the East Coast and am on the exact other side of the planet. But no one in the US is in any danger, and most people in Japan aren't even in any danger.

No one?

If I was in California, if I didn't already own iodine pills in my survival kit, I'd be getting some. just like I keep a rotating stock of things like cipro, Iodine tablets, food, water, shelter, etc, I would and do, have iodine tablets...

If the reactors melt down and release enough radiation, and Japan is not as forthcoming with the issue as France has accused them of, there is a strong potential for the possibility of black rain on the west coast.

Probably won't happen unless japan is lying thier asses off, if they are and you have mutliple meltdowns and radiation releases, the jet stream is just right, along with the correct weather system, well, it will suck to be the west coast....

we just don't know.

I imagine that was tongue in cheek, but let me address that anyway...

"On the Beach", "Catch-22" and so forth... not a lot of realism there. In most instances of fallout and common radioactive contamination, the radiation declines (decays) very rapidly. Deadly levels of radioactivity commonly decline within hours to only moderately dangerous, and within a couple weeks to "nearly harmless". The only exception is long-lived isotopes which are relatively uncommon in most situations where radiation is a threat.

So for the cost of a plane ticket to Austrialia, or so, you could have a small home-made underground shelter and week or two worth of food and water to allow you ride out almost any fallout situation. Cyanide capsules would be a slight over-reaction. :wassat1:

No such plans. As pointed out, this stuff isn't aspirin and according to the news it only protects for 48 hours, so you have to time it so that you take it at about the same time you're being exposed.

The Japan nuclear thing is getting serious. The IAEA has upgraded it to a #6 disaster, with Chernobyl being highest at #7. I think the experts are realizing there is no way out of this.
