I've got a challenge for those here at the DP.

In 99% of my posts I try very hard to not even mention a party when I respond to <insert political topic post here>. And I would dare anyone to go through my past posts and prove this wrong.

Anyways...

In alot of the posts around here you can see the various sides always commenting, blaming, flaming (when possible), and thinly making derogatory remarks against the opposite side.

So, here's a challenge to everyone that is designed to promote a new form of debating at DP. That of Debating from a neutral standpoint in regards to a political party standpoint.

Do not mention, type, hint anything about ANY party. Just discuss the topic. Its fine if a website that you link to mentions a political party. But don't let yourself mention a political party. Lets give this a try for one week and lets see how interesting the discussions REALLY get. ;) (note that if a thread is SPECIFICALLY about a party then its ok to mention the party..just try and keep it as neutral as possible though. ;) )

Now I'm making this into a poll so that we can use it as a sort of "sign up sheet". If you want to try it out just hit "agree". Don't want to? Just ignore the poll or hit "disagree". The poll will be open to the public so that we can all keep an eye on each other. :)

BTW: Just so that we are all on the same time line the challenge will begin at the closing of the poll which I set for 1 week.

In. One week shouldn't hurt anyone. Of course there will be certain individuals who will find themselves with nothing to say.

What is the purpose of this and what is the ultimate goal/end result? What are the success parameters of doing this?

The reason I'm asking is when discussing or arguing a point and the other person slings arrows (flames/trolls) the thread to death, what is your suggested action? Debating with such a person at an intellectual/factual level as you well know is no easy task.

Just ignore the flames/trolls and respond to the point. ;)

The point is to ignore party lines and to find and respond to the actual point/problem without going bonkers about he said/she said type of political arguements. I find that it often deflates trolls and flames equally and FAST when you just respond to a point and leave everything else out.

Really... well, I'll make sure to PM you so you can show me how to deflate trolls/flamers the next time I'm discussing the facts or point/problem. If you can show me how that's done, I'll sign up.

For some people, the only way they could do this would be to not post for a week. Some posters seem to be incapable of not bringing party/ideology into a discussion even if party/ideology is not part of the issue being discussed.

I've done challenges somewhat like this before. Folks that don't typically focus on attacking an ideology, tend to not bring ideology into things anyway. Those that DO focus on attacking ideology get very defensive because you are eliminating their main form of debate. If they cannot attack the opposing ideology in everything they say, they really have nothing to say.

I always address other posters as individuals rather than making sweeping generalizations about liberals vs. conservatives and Democrats vs. Republicans.

This should be interesting! I agree with CC, there are a lot of posters here that have no other debate tool except flaming opposition ideology, but it really shouldn't be too difficult for most of us.

I would, but it wouldn't be much of a challenge.

I get 15 results when I search for my posts containing Democrat, and 18 when I search for Republican, and most of them have either of those in the title anyway.

This is a very interesting idea. Considering the fact that I think both parties are equally to blame for screwing things up, I'd enjoy a period where there was a reduction in finger-pointing on that front.

I'm glad people are generally liking the idea. :D Lets hope we get many more posters to agree to this idea. :D

I'm in. See ya' in a week.

I think it's worth a try - one week, you say?

This should be interesting. I'm in.

The key is not to engage in a discussion or debate with an ideologue. If that's the case, we can do this all the time by just expanding our personal ignore list.

I'm pretty much the same way. I'm not married to any one political party anyway, and I try to avoid saying "all you liberals" or "oh you Democrats" very often at all. I prefer to discuss the ISSUES rather than rah-rah about the jerseys.

Pfft. I do this all the time and never shut up.
One must respect a honest man....I am much the same....debating is not my forte, involves digging up information.....too much like work.

good idea...IMO, both parties practice a kind of propaganda against us to keep us angry about minor issues while the really important issues go unresolved...

I would, but I have been/will be busy with school until about April, so I doubt I would be posting much.

I don't post much either, but I'm supporting it and when I actually do post I'm going to try to keep the mention of any political parties out of it. :)

True. I also support the idea, just didn't want people to think I would agree and then simply not post for a week.
