Beyonce In Blackface: Racist or Art?

Beyonce In Blackface: Racist Imagery or Art?

The thing about blackface is it's only racist if it's done to mock black people, which this clearly isn't.

Beyonce will be in black face for the March issue of L'Offciel Magazine to to honor musician and human rights activist Fela Kuti.

Do you feel this is racist or artistic?

Do you know what blackface is? Black face isn't putting make up in order to shoot pictures of yourself wearing clothes most people can't afford. Black face is tied to a performance denigrating black people by making a mockery of the entire race. Wearing dark make up is not racism anymore than LeBron James posing with some white woman is.

Kali, while I respect your crusade against racists and racism, I think we need to discuss more substantive issues than just what celebrities like Halle and Beyonce are doing.

In this case, if Beyonce is okay with it, then I'm okay with it.

Did I say I thought it was racist? NO! Lets not turn this into a bash Kali thread and focus on the issue. In other words: answer the poll and leave your personal thoughts about me out of it. I did not say it was racist so lets keep it moving please.

Beyonce is a dumb bimbo.

How so? She is married to the love (Shawn Carter/Jay Z) of her life and they been with each other for a long time. So explain to me how she a Bimbo? And if she was dumb she would not be so successful.

Beyonce and Jay-Z are a power couple and not sure why you gonna try to sit up here and say Bey a dumb bimbo:(

:prof Marrying someone doesn't mean she's smart. But she's quite a talented musician and business woman, so she's definitely not a bimbo.

Being in business and making money in pretty much everything you do shows some kind of intelligence. How else can we explain Glenn Beck and Fat Limbaugh?

The reason I pointed out her being married to Jay-Z is because a lot of folks seem to equate Bimbo with unintelligence and being loose/Ho. That is why I said that.

Oh and about the smart thing? Jay-Z did the smart thing and put a ring on it:2razz:

While I know it is love with Bey and JayZ? There is something to be said about two smart folks making a couple. Seems smart to me:)

I see this as nothing more than an ode to her African roots. Seriously, this is a model being a model, nothing racist about it.

I don't see anything racist with this, however I don't see anything particularly artistic about it either. Therefore I voted other.

Art is in the eyes of the beer holder.

Do we seriously have to scoop his eye out to get our art back?

It's a PR stunt to generate buzz and get people to talk about it. It worked.

Since no names appear in the poll for the 18 who chose 'racisit', I would think that indicates they were not members, so I'll simply discount those voters as trolls trying to stir up trouble...

A black woman wearing blackface of her own free will is certainly not racist.

Stephen A. Smith would like to have a word with you

I guess what bothers me is that like in one pic did you notice that only her face and neck were made "black". She is already a black woman so why the need to make her darker? Why not just put tribal markings on her face? Why the need to have her painted blacker than her own skin color? Why is her shade not lovely enough to paint or do up as is it is?

I am not ready to say it is racist but can see how some folks find it offensive, regressive and yes even racist.

Some celebrities make money because of their managers and handlers.. not because they are smart

I don't see what's racist about those photos...
