I've heard a lot about FOX News, but the thing I've heard the msot about them, is that they aren't part of mainstream media, and frequently criticize CNN and MSNBC for being part of it.

I've heard Sarah Palin remark that she won't let mainstream media block her message, and various negative references about mainstream media, but at the same time, she is a correspondent on FOX, and I haven't heard her say anything negative towards them.

So, this begs the question, is FOX part of the mainstream media they detest or not?

By the numbers, FOX has more viewers than any other news channel out there. They feature news, or "entertainment" like Glenn Beck, almost the entire day. They take a political bias like MSNBC.

By the definition from Wikipedia, which is "those media disseminated via the largest distribution channels."

I think without a doubt, FOX News is part of the "lamestream media" Palin among others detests.

EDIT: Is it possible for a Mod to make the poll public?

Yes I consider it part of the mainstream media

Of course it is, it is a main nation popular news channel, it is main stream and like many of the others it is just as bias in its own way, MSNBC and FOX are obviously both main stream and two of the most bias out there.

Of course it is.

When people speak of the MSM, they are generally referring to news organizations.

IDK.. it's hard to say..

I guess it could be mainstream, but some of views on it are not mainstream. Some of the views on other networks aren't mainstream either, so I am not sure what Palin is talking about or how to answer

Yes they are. I find it hard for a good argument how America's number 1 cable news network isn't mainstream.

Could they be a tributary?

FOX 'news' is a far right arm of the Republican Party. They are absolutely NOT mainstream in any way, shape or form.

Wait, the channel with the most viewers isn't mainstream? What do you define mainstream as?

Yes they are
They aren't like the other media outlets like ABC, NBC, and CBS but they mainstream.

Given the number of viewers and the lack of a specialized news domain (such as a certain industry or technology), I would say they are part of the main stream media

Its part of the Mainstream Media by definition.

The "Mainstream Media" is typically referring to the traditional form of media which is regularly consumed by people. This meaning Television Networks, Newspapers, and magazines.

The "Alternative Media" or "New Media" is typically referring to things like blogs (actual dedicated blogs, not just ABC's blog page), web focus reporting services (Think the Politico early on), webcasts, etc.

Radio is something that's falls somewhat on both sides, with the traditional "news" hours type shows being viewed as "Mainstream" where as "Talk Radio" which only came into major prevelance in its current incarnation in the past few decades being looked at as more of an "Alternative Media".

I think its a huge mistake in assuming that "Mainstream Media" equals "Liberal Media". Huffington Post is undoubtably liberal in its slant, however it is most decidingly NOT mainstream media. Fox News is unquestionably conservative in its slant, however it is impossible to honestly classify it as anything other than a mainstream news outlet.

That said, often when speaking of an overwhelmingly large group generalities are used to suggest that the majority represents it, not necessarily that its true 100%. Stating something like "Newspapers are a dying breed" isn't somehow negated by the fact that random newspaper X is doing well, nor should it make the person look foolish for saying it. That's because, by and large, the newspaper industry is on a down trend. If someone says that online focused news is horrible, pointing out "the politico" as a more online than paper example of something good doesn't necessarily defeat the point as a whole.

Stating "The Mainstream Media is leftwing", while technically not accurate, can reasonably be assumed through common sense and context that they're speaking about it in a generalized over arching sense rather than piece by piece.

So I think that Fox News is the mainstream media, but I do believe it is abnormal with regards to the direction it approaches the news than the vast majority of its contemporaries.

No it's propaganda, but most of the mainstream media is propaganda.
So I guess it is mainstream media.
In which case I just contradicted myself.

I'd say that as the most watched news network, it would be hard to define it as anything other than mainstream news. That being said, FoxNews is like an old rap artist. They are trying to keep their "street cred" while at the same time embracing the commercialism and notoriety. So FoxNews plays the outsider card as they feel they are the only national news network that allows conservatism to be a part of the news.

Are they "mainstream"? Yes
Are they an outsider to older news agencies? Yes

If America has really mainstream medias, the best one is surely FOX!
