Who Won The Space Race?

The United States

The former Soviet Union

I don't know

Can you add a "This poll is stupid" option?

The US won, and any 6th grader who paid attention in history class could tell you the same.

since we still don't have a lunar colony and haven't been back there in 35 freakin years...I'd say no one.

In terms of technological progress I would say that it's undeniable that the Soviet Union broke more records and advanced space flight/travel to a much more significant degree than the Americans.

Then again the Americans put men on the moon - allegedly. :D

Hence, the reason I asked for another poll option. When someone posts a poll for the sole purpose of dropping in progressive hack job links...

Damn I actually answered the poll, I feel so used...

Depends greatly on how you define it.

In America its generally defined as the race to get to the moon. Not surprising, the race to get to the moon is the race America won.

It could be equally legitimate to suggest that the first to make it INTO space was the winning of the space race, as typically the first to get to where you're trying to go is the winner.

You could easily say that America won the Race to the Moon while the USSR won the Race to Space.

Ultimately its a matter of opinion based on what arbitrary goal post you stick in for your designation of what the "Space Race" was. There wasn't some universal checked flag sitting there that marked the boundries. Simply because the US takes a view point of it that places them as the winner and "any 6th grader" could know that does not mean its some kind of absolute truth or measuring stick.

Of the things to quibble about in Palin's statement, you've grasped the wrong one.

but is LEO really "space"?

Just to clarify. You set up a poll on the forum purely as a set up for a nonsensical Palin bash?

Genuinely fascinating....

.

stick with what yer good at, as my ole pappy used to say. ;)

In terms of overall gains from and in the race to space including the moon, I would give it to the USA. In terms of just first in space the former Soviet Union.

D) It isn't over yet... not by a long shot, and the Chinese are catching up

The race into space is indeed over. China catching up at this point is really over rated. Until we come up with a much better and long term enerrgy source it will not matter anyway.
