Is it?

And yet it is important.

If two things are essentially the same, why do we give them different names? Why call a marriage a civil union if it's the same thing? It sounds rather stupid to say "I'm civilly united with my wife" rather than "I'm married to my wife." If a disagreement is semantic rather than substantive i don't see why it's all that important. So is your position that you support allowing gays to be married, but we can't actually call it "marriage," we have to call them "civil unions?" Sorry, but that sounds rather idiotic to me. Just call a duck a duck. Just call a spade a spade.

I like you al, but I have no idea what you are refering to here. I fear we won't have an economic recovery anywhere near what we need but I'm unaware of any organized resistance.

And I like you Dutch. There is no organization. Instead, there is a corrosive loss of faith.

There is a hollowing out of all American institutions. They are losing their legitimacy because they have each been captured by special interests. There is a looming loss of faith in the legitimacy of the republic because people are finally seeing it no longer works for them.

Most of the people currently unemployed will never return to their former standard of living. They will be permanently embittered. The young have known affluence, but will be unable to achieve it in the new normal. They will be heavily taxed to support entitlements for old folks. This will embitter them.

Average American living standards are going to take a major nosedive over the next two decades. The economic pie is shrinking relative to the rest of the world, and will lead to fierce internal struggle.

America is paralyzed. The left prevents America from developing its natural resources, and now the right will prevent America from developing renewables and alternatives. Paralysis leads to collapse.

America can't save herself unless everyone grabs a pail and starts bailing. But I'm going to sing in the rain, and then eat pizza and drink beer instead.

Because we want to keep an important part of our culture functioning. It means something to us. The reason "the left" can't accept civil unions is because they want to use the institution of marriage to advance their cause of legitimizing homosexual behavior. You see this isn't about "letting people" just do what's in their little ol' hearts. It's about using using the an institution "of mine" to advance a socio-political cause of the "left." It's one thing for you to support gay marriage but shouldn't you "at least" understand all of the ramifications of what it is you support?

I guess we're just going to have to disagree on this. The ramifications are illusory. A name is just a name. Words are supposed to be used to describe reality. Conservative Christianity does not have a monopoly on the word "marriage." The idea of this abstract entity known as "the institution of marriage" is a social construct and a legal fiction and has very little basis in reality. At the end of the day conservatives do not own a trademark of the word marriage and conservatives do not own the institution of marriage. The only marriage that truly "belongs to you" is your marriage to your wife, and as long as you maintain that relationship then you are doing yourself and "the institution of marriage" a favor. What other people choose to call themselves is their concern and not yours. That's just how I see it.

Also, homosexual identities and behavior exists whether or not you want it to. Legitimacy has nothing to do with it.

No, the Chinese population is composed of many different ethnic groups.
