Martrys of Free speech and of transparency of the government

How in the hell is he any kind of martyr?

Edit: oh, it's a poll option. How in the hell could any one pick that poll option? It's a stupid over the top statement.

He's striving for a completely transparent government, were the government would never keep anything secret that it's people should know. And he's fighting for freedom of speech.
He is a martyr for doing this, he will get burned, he will be extradited to Sweden and he will go to prison but Wikileaks and what he stands for will always continue. You can kill the philosopher, but can't kill his idea. THAT is why he is a martyr.

What is your opinion on them?

I don't support them releasing state secrets willy-nilly. I do support their latest endeavor...targetting those individuals and corporations who are evading Federal income tax and storing their booty in Swiss bank accounts. Bring it!

He made a distinction between transparent society (did not say 'government', but it was in direct response to such) and some sort of claim of justice. He said sometimes they go hand in hand, but transparency was not his aim.

Secondly, I question the man's (and the group's) ability to dictate what the public has the right to know and what it does not have the right to know. I find it vastly counter-productive to the dictates of statescraft.

Some philosophers undermine the state, others choose the wiser path of not aiming to disturb it.

He is in prison for a god damn sex crime. It has exactly jack and **** to do with WikiLeaks. He is still ****ing alive, so he can't be a martyr. Over the top rhetoric is stupid.

Calm down. Are you familiar with what the actual sex "crime" was?

Sex without a condom. Yep. Scary stuff. Both ladies wanted to have sex and said it was ok with them to have sex. Both said it was good and enjoyable. Both said that he refused to wear a condom. One said it was a bit rough, but she never asked him to stop. Unsure if that qualifies as rape, but then again it isn't in the US.

The below video tries to be as unbiased as possible. It is well written and made. Some history and facts.

I chose other. He can't be a martyr as he is still living. Now if he was killed then he would be a martyr. But I do support wikileaks in their endeavors.

I personally love what they're doing.

why? do you hate freedom?

the answer is simple; they are your extreme self-deluded far leftists, convinced that to be anti-western is good.

Yes, he is a bit of and arrogant guy. Yes, he is a bit of a prick. But none the less the cause he and Wikileaks fight for are something I will always support.

Islamic fundamentalism?

Huh? Liking what wikileaks is doing is considered "anti-western" and hating freedom? What screwed up logic brought you to this idiocy?

I am anti-western. I am an extreme leftist. Your point?

...that it's not surprising that you like wikileaks?

Part of it yes but not the whole. Majority is that they strive for transparent governments.

More precisely, they strive to influence governments to do what they want them to do.

What is your opinion on them?

WikiLeaks is like all groups with a point of view; they can take things too far. But, I think their basic premise is correct — that the more we know the better off we are.

Isn't that the point of democracy? Of politics?

I know that I wish I had the power to persuade the government to do what I wanted it to do. I want the government to reward my friends and punish my enemies. I want the government to implement policies that I think are good for the American people-- our people. I want to remake the government in my own image and use it to imprint that image on the blank face of society. I question the motives of any person who claims otherwise.

Of course. The difference is that you openly admit that, while wikileaks and its naive supporters claim that they're just an altruistic organization trying to serve some neutral interest, like "transparency."

I'm not criticizing them for the fact that they want to influence government, I'm criticizing them for:

1) The way in which they are seeking to exercise that influence, and
2) Their misguided and ultimately dangerous aims

Everyone likes to think that the majority-- the "silent" majority-- would agree with them and support their causes if given the right information. WikiLeaks is just doing something about it.

Can't say as I have any argument with you there.

Interesting, so you two wish that WikiLeaks would be a little more revealing about their own purposes. Seems to me like it's pretty obvious what they're about but whatever.

No, I wish they'd die in a fire. Being honest about their attempts to manipulate the government doesn't change the very real damage they are doing to our foreign policy goals.

No, I'm saying that I wish wikileaks would close up shop and that I wish its (generally naive) supporters would open up their eyes and stop bleating about how this is all part of their divine mission to fight the man, man.

Seems to me like it's pretty obvious what they're about but whatever.

They claim to be all about transparency and not to have any hidden agendas.
In reality, they're an activist group that operates to push a viewpoint.

Just to make the point I am a far lefty and I hate WIkiLeaks.

Fair, it's mostly the "I'm anti-western" that I think serves as a good proxy for "I support wikileaks."
