On this day, the 50th anniversary of JFK's inaugural address, I've put up the following poll. It's self explanatory.

Majority of the Americans I know whine about the government and don't do anything about it. They are concerned about what programs, benefits, decisions et cetera, that government can offer than helping with coming up with solutions. My country and the US need more referendums.

We've become a welfare state that hates paying taxes...need I say more?

“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country” has morphed into "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask why it's not doing more...for you."

I think most people want to know what their country can do for them. And honestly, that's the way it should be. JFK's quote was a nice soundbite for history, but expecting good governance is far more important than offering one's services out of a sense of nationalism.

I remember JFK's inaugural address. America was a different country then. The American people had a very different consciousness then.

The entitlement mentality had not become part of the DNA

I was a Democrat back then. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought it would come to this. Americans then wanted to be free. Now Americans want to be free and be taken care of at the same time. They don't realize the choice is either/or, not both.

People like to give the impression of being self sufficient, but they are really not. No man is an island. Myself, I welcome all the help I can get, anytime, anywhere, and I don't care where it comes from.

Maybe two percent depend on welfare for one reason or another. The other ninety-eight percent need some kind of steady work to keep their sanity.

many more than 2 percent use more government services than they pay for in taxes. those services are thus entitlements

Other, of course.
I have no way of knowing which is true, I have no stats, no numbers.
Imagine the poll question and the responses.
I doubt if human nature has changed much o'er the years.
In the 1600s, man had no choice, other than to farm, hunt, or steal from others.
One of these is a problem, even today.
Enter welfare, I think this has worked, but not perfectly.

Referendums have not worked well in California,IMO.

More American's want their country to do more for them

A lack of nationalism could just lead to a lack of a nation.

They want the country to do more for them, be it decreasing its presence or increasing its presence. Here or there there is a sense of civic duty, but I think it is rather muted. To a degree, I would not be surprised if it was never that emphasized anyhow (history has made me a slightly non-rosy colored guy), but one cannot help but feel as if civic duty is not really pushed. For instance, when one politician or prominent government worker dies, I think to myself "thank you for your service." Many others will say, "thank you for your service (because I agreed with you)", but when it is someone less agreeable, "This guy/gal was a scumbag. Good riddance." Then again, my perspective rings a bit too much like "fascism" for many, because I happen to like nationalism.

The last election proves this wrong. It was a referendum on our little Red Leader. Pierre Trudeau Obama. That historic election resulted in a vote in the House to repeal Obamanistan Kare by more votes than what it took to pass the obomination. No bribes were required either.

Now it is up to Dirty Hairy Reid. Of course he will try to avoid bringing up that issue. Wonder what he is fearful of?

He's not fearful of "whining"... it cuts a little deeper than that.

As for the JFK question... we have more people today than in JFK's day (but not a majority as evidenced by the last election) willing to use the government as a conduit to thieve money from others, and they are vocal about it. Back in JFK's day, people would have thought you were daft.

I understand you position but I still think Americans whine more than act.

Also, I don't understand why so many people are agianst Nationalised Health Care? Free visits to the doctor is amazing. I don't know why you Americans reject it! Obamacare is the first step forward to that.

Also... Why the Pierre Trudeau reference? Really? He was a better leader than any other Canadian PM will ever be.

Probably because it's not free. Nothing is "free".

None the less, paying extra taxes, to not be rejected at the hospital because you don't have insurance, or the money, is amazing.

Not amazing here in the U.S. Many of us like paying for things ourselves instead of trusting some bureacracy to take all of our money and do the right things with it. That, historically, hasn't been working so well.

Nothing is free. Somebody is paying for your health care. If not out of your check, than it's out of your neighbor's check.

Didn't I hear a while back that some place in Canada they held a lottery? If you were lucky enough to get your name drawn you got a doctor?
