DUBLIN – A 1997 letter from the Vatican warned Ireland's Catholic bishops not to report all suspected child-abuse cases to police — a disclosure that victims' groups described as "the smoking gun" needed to show that the church enforced a worldwide culture of covering up crimes by pedophile priests.

The newly revealed letter, obtained by Irish broadcasters RTE and provided to The Associated Press, documents the Vatican's rejection of a 1996 Irish church initiative to begin helping police identify pedophile priests following Ireland's first wave of publicly disclosed lawsuits.

catholic priests like altar boys almost as much as muslims like 6 year old girls and boys.
 
Pedophillia has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with the state and law. You can't molest children in the U.S. regardless of what religion you belong to.
 
I don't think they "allow" it, but if you are high enough up they will cover for you. It's a shame when they deify priests and pope beyond fault and will lie and cover for them in order to keep that image.

Not that I disagree. But how many priests ended up in prison over this? I don't really know the number.

Yes. Church policies have tacitly allowed pedophilia to flourish. My vote. I cannot believe that Bishops, etc., who live in the United States and have turned a blind eye, remain on prosecuted. I'm guessing "the state" doesn't want to tackle religion. But both sides, BOTH sides, should be ashamed of themselves.

I used to donate to St. Vincent DePaul. I wouldn't give them a broken toaster.

hmmm I find that when I hear catholic priest I think pedophile, I might also think dirty old men. Hopefully more and more catholic parents will keep their children away from these priests.
