eurosocialists hate America even when one of their kindred spirits is in the White House

They hate us because we've been kicking their asses for the past couple hundred years.

So?

If the Brits wanted to take the US, then they could. They could come down from Canada and swamp what was the US. But much of their resources were tied up in Europe fighting Napoleon and else where (India and so on). That they stopped the US aggression into Canada was enough for the Brits at the time, and that was that.

And as your own link says, the British saw it as too costly to continue to attack New Orleans, so they withdrew.. they were never defeated. They were even preparing for more attacks when the peace treaty news came out. Had the war continued, then the British could easily have destroyed the US if they so wanted too.

I dont think American's understand how powerful the British Empire was at the time and later on. That they did not see the US/old colonies as a good place to expand is their own fault.. they did during this period expand into the largest empire the world has ever seen, had the biggest and best military at the time (and arguably relatively .. ever), and were utterly dominating the planet from Europe to Asia over Africa.

United States. I thought everyone knew America won. The poll shows that most people picked America.

No, you lost. The US embarked on the endeavour to conquer Canada, which they didn't and everything just ended up status quo ante bellum.

America's performance on land during the War of 1812 was abysmal until the Battle of New Orleans. Jackson's night attack on the British advance guard was epic in it's drama and effect.

America's performance at sea and on the Great Lakes was stirring. It's too bad so few Americans are familiar with the war. The best book on the conflict imo is: Amazon.com: The Naval War of 1812 (Modern Library War) (9780375754197): Theodore Roosevelt: Books

Then why did the British agree to end the war PRIOR to the Battle of New Orleans. There were bright spots and hardships for the U.S. in the war, but with the exception of the conquest of Canada, the U.S. met ALL of its war objectives, AND was left with a more diversified economy as a result of the British blockades...

There was no "winner". The treaty of Ghent went back to pre-war boundaries. The result was that the U.S. showed itself capable of defending itself against the British and Canada capable of defending itself against the U.S. Nobody was pleased about spending a large bit of money and lives for maintaining the status quo.

True, the parties agreed to return to the status quo ante, but AFTER the war, the British truly abided by the boundary agreed to between the two in the Treaty of Paris of 1783 whereas before the war, the British only paid lip service to it.

The primary reasons for the war were the interference of the British as well as their Indian allies in the West and to a lesser extent in the South. The War Hawks came primarily from the West and South while New England, largely Federalist, was anti-war. This war led to absolute dominance of U.S. politics by the Democrat-Republicans and the descent of the Federalists into a regional party that disappeared altogether in 1820.

However, the U.S. largely met its primary goals in the war. To end British interference on the U.S. side of the border. As has already been pointed out, impressment, another reason for U.S. complaints against Britain (but not a primary reason for war sentiments of the War Hawks in the West and South) was largely ended due to the end of European hostilities.
