I was wondering about this at work after hearing of someone accidentally copying in an "unhelpful" remark for someone's reference and wondered how I would deal with it.

If you're the kind of person who always checks the sender, great, bully for you. I really want to hear from everyone else though. And please remember - this is a hypothetical and light hearted "IF."

Here's hoping the poll option button works..

Personally I wouldn't know how to react. I think and hope I would be upfront about it so I'm going with that.

Who knows until in that situation though.. however if it was about an ex girlfriend or something like that, I'd probably be a coward and pretend I'd never said what I'd said. :3oops:

I don't know...

I haven't sent emails on such subjects at any point in my life - most of my derogatory comments have occurred during in-person discussions and/or via IM or voice chat.

Or on this forum...

I’d probably contact the person as soon as I realized the mistake, explain the situation, and depending on the person, either go for the bad joke, or say to their face what I said in the email…

Hasn't everyone done this at least once?

I once had egg all over my face.
I belonged to a message board and also a list of where a few posters would get together to vent about other posters or the monitors in a way that was prohibited on the board.
I got a message from a monitor on my ass about something and started telling the "list" all about it. I was pissed. As soon as I hit send, I realized I was replying to the monitor!
No getting out of it. I had to apologize.

Depends on your relationship with that person...

Where I live, you should NEVER make a derogatory statement by email or in public as it is subject to legal action... always better to do it one-on-one because it became your word against his/hers...

I voted that I'd go to the person, but it'd never happen to me. Important to remember:

Say it forget it -- Write it regret it.
