If you could write any amendments to the US Constitution, what would they be?

You really should change it to, "Which of my favorite possible Amendments do you like?" No need to be facetious :doh

I would rather have my bill of rights back first. Then we can talk about the others.

Repeal the 17th, Abolish the income tax and replace it with a flat tax (the fair tax would not work), Limit all bills in Congress to under 100 pages in length.

none of the above
how about , for a stupid idea, an amendment that bans such anti-American thought.

You want to repeal the seventeenth amendment? What makes you think a bunch of politicians can pick your senator better than you can?

Ban weapons that are deigned to kill so many.
What the hell is the matter with us?
Do we enjoy murdering others?
Wonderful news if CongressWOMAN Giffords pulls through.

Every single one is a bad idea. Just my opinion though

The states would have a vote in Washington again. As it is now (thanks to the 17th amendment), they don't. The founders set up Congress the way they did for a reason.

The states are made up of the people in those states. Therefore, the states do have such a vote.

Equal Rights Amendment. Oh wait! All of its provisions are law at this point, no need.

Some are good but they don't require a constitutional amendment.

Mandate a balanced budget each year. Or more realistically, mandate a balanced budget over a rolling period from, say, 3-5 years. I don't really care if there's a couple hundred million budget deficit one year as long as the deficit isn't growing uncontrollably.

Get rid of the electoral college and have a direct election of the president.

Change our voting system to instant run-off voting.

Disallow fillibusters in the senate.

Change tax policy to have a flat tax on earnings over what's required for basic necessities (food, shelter, etc.)

Add in a definition of 'person' to be any homo sapien that is past 20 weeks gestational age.

Institute basic (as in covers major emergencies and nothing else) government-provided healthcare for everyone in the country.

Domestic partnership rights for all (adult) Americans. Marriage would be strictly ceremonial.

I'm sure there are others, but that's all I can think of at the moment. Some of these might not require constitutional amendments.

Repeal the income tax and replace with the Fair Tax

I would most definitely support this.

Repeal Amendment 14

I would repeal this simply for the fact people do not seem to understand the subject to "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof" part, which means the 14th does not apply to any and everybody born in the US which is why the Indian citizenship act of 1924 and the nationality act of 1940 were created to ensure that those born here were natural born citizens.

Abolish Govt-run welfare, health care, education, etc.

I support those things. I support welfare only as a helping hand.Everybody can not afford an education for their kids. Eliminating it would possibly put education in the hands of religious institutions trying to indoctrinate in exchange for education.
Mandate a balanced budget every year

I would most definitely support this.

Limit total taxes and spending to under 15%
I am not to sure this is possible while maintaining necessities.
Stop all wars and meddling abroad
The meddling apart I can agree with but we should finish what ever little wars we are engaged in. Just stopping a war without finishing it makes it a bigger waste of lives and dollars than seeing it through to the finish. We should ban all foreign aid

Abolish all meddlesome regulations and mandates
Some of those regulations and mandates are pretty good, so no.

Privatize social security
No.For the simple fact **** happens. Those in office should be banned from opting out of social security, after all if it is good enough for the tax payers the it should be good enough for those in office too.
Make all states independent nations

No.If we did that then what would be the point of having a United States of America?

Other (specify)

An amendment banning abortion except for when 3-4 pro-life doctors have verified that a c-section or vaginal birth at least 40% viability will be fatal to the mother's life and in order to prevent abuse there will be a vetting process of doctors to ensure that they are actually pro-life( because there are liars out there who claim to be pro-life but think abortion should be legal)

An amendment to strengthen the 2nd amendment by specifying what shall not infringe means since so states like California, NewYork, and Illinois fail to grasp what that means.

An amendment to limit the pay of politicians and to ensure that only voters can raise or lower a politicians pay. The country as a whole will vote on the president's pay, and then it breaks down to senate and congressional districts. And only those in that congressman's or senators district can run commercials on why that politician should, should not have a raise or not have any changes made to their pay what so ever.

An amendment requiring politicians to read out loud the bills they plan on voting yes for. Also this amendment would require that they present a oral and written report as to why we need this bill. This amendment would also ban politicians from having others read the bill for him, seeing how it is that politician's job to read the bills before he votes for them anyways. And bills will be posted online for a minimum of at least 72 hours for a hundred pages and an additional day for every 33 pages assuming the font size is around 12(this is to ensure that they do not use microprint to squeeze a 1000 page bill into a 100 pages).

An immigration enforcement bill. This bans any future amnesties for illegals and mandates that politicians on every level do not undermine this. No one who is currently illegally in this country shall have any legal status. Tax payer funded services and benefits will be denied to illegals. Politicians will be jailed for trying to grant them amnesty, ignore laws against illegal immigration to try to give benefits or services to illegals. Those deliberately hire illegals including those who deliberately turn a blind eye in order to hire illegals will lose their business license, thrown in prison, and be subject to the same assets seizure and forfeiture law upon a conviction.

An amendment allowing for voter initiatives on the federal level. Politicians can not always be trusted to do the right thing. Voter initiatives will not contain tax payer benefit programs.Voter initiatives requiring spending must contain a tax plan.

An amendment mandating an open election.Everybody regardless of political affiliation can run for president, senator or congressman.Everybody who wants to be president runs and then top 3 run in a main election and if a candidate has more than 50% then that candidate is the winner. But if no candidate has more than 50% of the vote then that the top two candidates run in a final election.

An amendment allowing citizens to recall their elected officials on the federal level including the president and vice president.

An amendment making english the official language for all government business. This includes eduction, street signs, documents and ballots, police officers and other government workers. Exceptions will be made for immigration officers and border guards who may need to question those coming into the country as well as diplomats to other countries.

An amendment to increase tariffs so that American businesses can fairly compete with non-American companies(this includes outsourced companies). You have to be high on drugs to think that American companies can compete with countries who pay their workers a dollar a day or less and who do not have to abide by the same standards the American companies do.

I just thought of another good one.

Have a set of relatively simple questions made up by political scholars that cover the majority of political issues in the country. Pass an amendment requiring anyone running for public office to answer the questions on the sheet and post the answers to a website accessible to everyone so that it's possible to know what someone stands for before you vote on them.

From what I have seen from the citizens and law-makers and their level of behavior, I'd say neither.
But, this may be an "idea" with merit.

An excellent proposal.
Rather than banning and repealing, I'd say that the citizens and politicians should study and try to understand..Those who cannot or will not read should return to being floor-sweeps.

The founders set up a flawed system. That's why we need to change it from time to time. Remember setting it up so that women couldn't vote? Good job founders. Or the vice president being the person who got the second most amount of votes? That part was a keeper. I don't get why people have this idea "the founders set it up, so that's always the best way to do it" mentality.

I have to wonder if the anti 17th amendment people ever looked at what happened back then. Most of the time, the senate seat would just become a bargaining chip for political maneuvering in the state house. Deadlock would lead senate seats unfilled for months at a time. They'd almost always be some of the biggest political insiders you've ever seen. And you think having senators be chosen by politicians would be good for this country? weird.

What's unfortunate is that I'm left with little doubt as to the seriousness of your proposal.

You think Redress is serious or am I misreading your post?
