What action threatens the future of mankind the most? Threatens our prosperity, lifestyle, health, happiness and even our survival on this planet?

Is it military aggression or war?
An emergence of a dominant world political structure?
Large scale economic failures?
A dominant one nation superpower?
Attention placed on the global environment?

There are a lot of potentially dangerous paths, but which path in your opinion, will have the most negative impact on our lives in the years to come?

The greatest threat?

Nature.

Probably the proliferation of nuclear and biological weapons.

Everything else on the list could be bad for a lot of people, but there's nothing that has the same potential to destroy all life.

The greatest threat in the coming decades will be the proliferation of nuclear weapons technology. A close second is the proliferation of ballistic missile technology.

Short sighted, all of you. The greatest threat is the proliferation of the wrong ideas.

None of the above. The greatest threat is the proliferation of WMDs which fall into the hands of terrorists...specifically bio-engineered diseases.

I'd think it'd be caused because of a breakdown of relations in the Middle East, or terrorists getting one of the ABC's (Atomic, Biological, Chemical).

That can cripple, not kill humanity. In regard to the OP, though, it could change our lifestyle, prosperity etc.

How do you define threat? Are we talking the end to all human life? Or something more like as we know it?

None, the greatest threat to mankind is an ever expansion of government which does nothing but steal, kill and lie.

I agree because giving any government alot of power can make all our worst fears possible with just the push of a button.

most possible threats are going to come from a government-directly or indirectly

Unless there's another world war that goes uber nuclear, I can't see anything that really poses a threat to mankind as a whole.

Disagree. As long as they're confined to governments, there are only 200 or so different actors we need to worry about. Any kid majoring in biology will be able to make unspeakably awful diseases in a decade or two. That's a lot more worrisome than anything North Korea might have up its sleeve.

In the short term I worry about rogue states like North Korea or even terrorists getting hold of nuclear or biological weapons.
In the medium-long term (say 100 to 200 years) I think there is going to be a series of nasty wars as natural resources such as coal and oil begin to dry up.
In the very long term (millenia or longer) The world (and universe) around us is our greatest threat. Whether it's another dinosaur killer, a supervolcano, runaway climate change, or something else, there will eventually be some outside event that threatens humanity's existence.

Some of the choices would have results that are equivalent to others. It depends on how global environmental policies are implemented but if done the way many nations speaking the recent UN Climate Summit are proposing, world capitalism would be abandoned in favor of socialism and the financial meltdown/instability in US and Western Europe would occur.

It has to be the proliferation of nukes.

The greatest threat? Affluence and apathy.

None of the above.
A "world super-power" will become a thing of the past.
The greatest danger is world conservative-ism where things become out of balance, and non-thinking prevails. This has already happened in our nation with the so-called republicans spinning the truth, ever so cleverly.

The only thing that would have a complete global effect is a super volcano such as Yellowstone, an impact from a large comet or astroid, or something like a hypernova blast.

I am rooting for the hypernova blast because it just sounds so cool.

.

I say the chemicalization of the human species. I can't tell you how many couples I know that can't conceive. I could see us going out a la Children of Men.

That also seems to be a problem with some animal species, too.

Loss of financal stability/meltdown in U.S. What's the old saying? When the U.S. sneezes, the rest of the world gets pneumonia? I don't think that's changed.

My instincts tell me that if unemployment gets much higher, we're going to see a real spike in crime...If our gutless politicians can't renegotiate/change public sector pension benefits, states will go bankrupt defaulting on muni's...and the domino effect will have begun.
