No, plain and simple. Also I don't see a reason why dolphins shouldn't be hunted, as long as there are protections in place that makes sure they don't become extinct.

What the ****? You would like us to hunt a sentient species? Your one of the people who is going to be responsible for a full-scale war when we make first contact with aliens.

Then perhaps we should give dolphins rights. And televisions.

as I said earlier, let em vote and give them tax payer funded abortions on demand, maybe even food stamps

make dolphin IQ the new standard. If a human is dumber than a dolphin...off with their head and let a dolphin take his/her place in human society.

They are not a sentient species, they are just an animal. An animal that is below us on the food chain, if someone wants to eat them, or use their body to fulfill a need there is no reason they shouldn't be allowed too.

they don't taste very good, do they precious? nasty tasting dolpinses

Eh, I could care less, if someone wants to eat them, or use them I really don't care, as long as we don't wipe them out. What is the difference between a cow, and a dolphin?

What if they are capable of independent and advanced thought? What if they are thinking "should we hunt the humans?" while we are thinking "should we hunt the dolphins?"

Dolphins are much cuter.

It seems the only reason people are so up in arms about it, and why that stupid show Whale Wars is so popular. I just can't see why it's wrong to kill and eat one animal, and not another.

If they were they would have found a way to communicate with us by now. It's a ridiculous notion that they are sentient.

we have better weapons. they lose.

If they're capable of independent and advanced thought and of inflicting any considerable amount of damage upon us, they're capable of demanding rights and there would be a basis upon which to reach an accord.

We haven't been able to communicate with them though? So why would they be able to demand rights by communicating with us?

It doesn't matter why they're not capable. If they're no threat to us and they serve no purpose to us, they don't matter.

In Spain dolphins are officially recognized as non-human persons. Scientists also claim that dolphins show signs of being both sentient and sapient (capable of advanced independent thought, similar to humans) and should be considered non-human persons. Do you believe that dolphins should be considered non-human persons?

Does this mean that tuna fishermen could be charged with man...er...personslaughter?

Of course dolphins should be included as people, which means that they shouldn't be allowed to fish in marine parks, we should be able to fine them if they hunt a protected species, and throw them in jail if they don't pay the fine.

Apparently Spain is dee dee dee.

Urban Dictionary: dee dee dee

buy dee dee dee mugs, tshirts and magnets
A person who is not born as mentally retarded, but who was born normal, and has become stupid.

snip..

A term you say when somebody does something REALLY stupid. not like forgeting their keys, like thinking Rhode Island is not a state. Made famous by comedian Carlos Mencia, you say it like imitating a retarded person.

I have no problem with protecting dolphins. I think it is kinda silly to have to label them as "persons" in any way to give them the protection however. Dolphins are smart. And, it is quite possible that they may eventually evolve to be able to communicate with other species sometime in the future or we may find an effective way to communicate with them. Maybe they know stuff that we don't.

Sure, I'm a bleeding heart environmentalist. I don't care. I don't see any reason that we should kill dolphins for food (I don't know of any culture that couldn't survive or that would even be hurt, by not being allowed to eat dolphins). As for eating one animal over another, I'd say that most people have no interest in eating dolphins anyway, and a lot of people do take into consideration the potential intelligence level of the into consideration when making food choices. And dolphins aren't really in our food chain, cows have been there for a long time.

And, as far as economic reasons go, I usually put the environment ahead of most economic interests. Most things that are done for the environment are not so horrible that they will cause people to starve.
