Re: Should school uniforms be banned?

Don't hold your breath, Kelzie,,,,
To the uneducated and inexperienced, unfounded opinion is all that matters....:2razz:

What experience do I need? What education don't I have?

It doesn't take any sort of research to know what are clothes or that the problems you guys are talking don't change when you get older.

Real tough stuff here that needs research? Seriously? I will do it but damn, really?

and your age is? you have to be fairly young and naiive to dismiss the value of experience and education....

What are you talking about?

What are you going to do when you have to grow up and wear work clothes?

Could the money possibly be one of the many differences? Oh yeah, it is.

I don't know why would people put up with there? Could it be the money? Oh yeah, that is it.

Getting an education drastically increases lifetime earnings, so it seems comparable.

We enable them, as we have in the past...I have a younger brother who worked 2 years, in the Navy, and has never held a job since. He is 61.....somehow qualifies for a 50% veterans disability rating, for bad hearing....In 4 years, he will qualify for a VA pension, based on low income....
I am hoping that the recession we are in now causes some serious thinking by our politicians. We need to stop handing out welfare to those who are able to work, but are just unwilling. I look at my lazy brother, and then at a friends grown Downs Syndrome daughter who is self supporting, and see a great injustice.

I do a lot of training with adults, and I tell teachers that it is very important for THEM to dress professionally to set an example for their kids. The sloppiest looking professionals out there are usually teachers.

Re: Should school uniforms be banned?

You all are asking for a study well here is one:

I'm sure you do. However, the most CURRENT research on the subject suggests that school uniforms decrease disciplinary problems and bullying.

School uniform improves pupils' behaviour both in and out of school | Mail Online

That's not research, that's a survey of teenagers in the UK where uniforms have been dominant for decades. It's worthless garbage is what it is.

You are aware that all of childhood is one big lesson in social control aren't you? You don't like it? Turn 18.

Already did that a while ago, that does not mean I have any newfound love for social control. The demand for conformity and the authoritarian style of rule are just as repulsive to me now as they ever were.

Teenagers who took part in the Oxford Brookes University survey said dress codes acted as a social leveller and reduced the risk of children being picked on for wearing "weird" clothes

A survey is the raw data for a study, or did you miss that in school?

You did that (turned 18) a very short time ago, based on the content of your posts. When you have children of your own, which won't be for several more years hopefully, you will change your mind. When you do, you can come back here and tell us you were wrong. Until then, you won't recognize that you are no matter what the rest of us say.

I turned 18 a while back, too, about 50 years back to be exact. I have three wonderful grandsons who wouldn't be so wonderful without that terribe authoritarian style of rule their parents subject them to.

My heart bleeds for you, oppressed teenager.

Re: Should school uniforms be banned?

Sadly, I was already in my 30s at that point.

If you are looking for sympathy, well, you have probably heard THAT joke....13 years ago I was 51...

But, I wonder, what kind of uniform would the OP desire if he had the choice? There can't be many to choose from...
There is saggy and baggy pants, or saggy and tight pants, with a short shirt to show off the boxers, or a long shirt to hide the tighty whities with skid marks.
Leave the children to their own devices and you get a fashion statement worthy of "Lord of the Flies"....

Re: Should school uniforms be banned?

I don't think that uniforms should be mandated in public schools normally. If the schools are having a lot of issues because of the clothing the students are wearing, then the dress code should probably be changed or then, they can talk about school uniforms with the parents. The parents are the ones who are going to have to buy those school uniforms. It may be less expensive for someone who allows their children to buy new school clothes every year, not so for people who have many children and/or buy their children's clothes from Goodwill or thrift stores or get hand-me-downs from other relatives.

Also, it is most likely that the schools will each have different color combinations and even styles of uniforms for their schools, and possibly each grade. That would really suck for parents who have to move around more than most families and could get expensive. It is not fair for schools to force more and more restrictions on parents unnecessarily. In most cases, distractions and/or violence from clothing worn at school can be dealt with through school dress code rules and punishments appropriate to what the violation is and how often the student committed such violations.

Re: Should school uniforms be banned?

I think the decision on whether to require school uniforms should be made at the local level, with perhaps some reasonable restrictions (no nudist schools? :2razz:) at the state and/or federal levels.

Preferably not federal.

Re: Should school uniforms be banned?

Your survey dates to 1997.

Not a survey from 1997! Things have changed so much since those days that you can't possibly......Oh wait..no they haven't.

What other objection do you have?

It's a single research study that has been rendered obsolete by more current research. See, if you had a good education, you'd understand these things.

Most uniforms in public schools are commensurate with parents' financial circumstances, and typically include khaki pants/skirts/shorts that can be worn anywhere, with a single-colored polo or cotton shirt.

I'd suggest that these items could be purchased at goodwill and/or any other inexpensive store (Target, anyone?). Target, Walmart, and Old Navy all carry uniform-style clothing that will work with most schools' uniform codes.

Oh schools have changed but anything of value change that would change the results? Not that I see.
