Taken from the other thread and from Winston's comment. So, tell us, when you use the term "liberal" do you use it to identify a political lean or ideology, or to be insulting?

Oh, and here's a little additional piece. Anyone who chooses "No, I do not use it as an insult", will cause me to do a thorough search of their posts. I will then, for honesty's sake, post ANYTHING that seems to refute their claim that they do not use it to be insulting. Let's get a little honesty going here at DP.

Go to it.

No, but I have heard conservatives use it as such. Like I remember when Obama was running I heard alot of conservative radio host, hell even my family say that he was the most liberal senator in congress, as if that was supposed to make me not vote for him. I would say "yeah thats a good thing" just to watch them flip out

Liberal, and don't use it as an insult for obvious reasons.

Liberals are always butthurt about something. Now they are butthurt over liberals being used as insult. Stop being butthurt for a change.

So, how did you vote, Henrin? And I see I don't have to go far to search for posts... depending on your answer, of course. ;)

LOL most on the right use it as a slur.. tsk tsk quite a few people not telling the truth in this poll.

I'm butthurt 'cause I sat on some stinging nettles, is that 'cause I'm a liberal?

Does it count of we use it sarcastically?

Conservatives were butthurt when The View called Sarah Palin an idiot, and for a million other things...

As far as I know, I've never used 'liberal' as an insult. Pretty sure I haven't used 'conservative' as an insult either.

Obviously you're insulted by the word, that's why you hide behind the centrist lean.

The therm "Liberal" is too worst insult, to use it is a sin, I prefer other words if I want to offend my enemies.

I am relatively conservative on many, but not all, issues.

I use it to identify positions or individuals that I consider "liberal". Since I oppose the majority of liberal-agenda-items, this identifying descriptor is, to me, a negative. As in, "Obama is too liberal."

OTOH, I don't think I've ever flung it around as an overt insult, as if it were a substitute for "dirty rotten scoundrel". I don't consider liberals to be bad people, just somewhat misguided or mistaken.

On the other, other hand, the terms "liberal" and "conservative" have been so mis-used and mis-defined in recent decades that they've become relatively meaningless. Then there's the issue that Europeans and most of the world don't mean the same thing by "liberal" or "conservative" as we in the States do. This is one of the reasons why my lean label is "independent": I don't want people mistakenly assuming where I stand on the basis of an ill-defined label.

Liberal can mean so many things dependent on the era, the political system in place etc. American leftists are hardly liberal when it comes to economics and government-reactionary parasitic statism is a more accurate description for those whose answer to every problem is more government, more regulations, and more taxation. I tend to refer to such people as welfare-socialists which is a more accurate term. On some social issues, "liberal" might be an accurate description such as allowing gays in the military or gay marriage-the "liberal" position is one that would be understood as liberal for decades.

I tend to use "liberal" as a term of endearment. I use "Conservative" as a label, and "Neo-Con" as an insult.

It would be an odd day indeed if I used the term liberal as an insult. My personal preference is to not use political labels as insults, but rather say "x ideology is wrong because ..."

what is a neo-con? welfare-socialists and other lefties tend to not understand the term

I refer to a political ideology rather than a person, and consider liberalism a good thing. I just don't apply it to too many people because there aren't too many people here who express views consistant with liberal ideology with enough regularity as to call them liberals.

Bring it. :2razz:

I try not to lump people into groups so much. I don't assume that anyone with similar political ideals can be grouped up like that. However, I reserve the word "douche" for people who act like douches, regardless of any political lean.

I'm good with the Wikipedia definition:

Neoconservatism is a political philosophy that supports using economic and military power to bring market liberalism, democracy, and human rights to other countries.[1][2][3] In economics, unlike paleoconservatives and libertarians, neoconservatives are generally comfortable with a limited welfare state; and, while rhetorically supportive of free markets, they are willing to interfere for overriding social purposes.[4]

I did the bold. I don't like war-hawks.

Some really bigoted hard core (they think) right wingers (you know who you are) do use it as such. For example finishing off a post and saying "my left wing friend" is not a term of endearment, period.

It is a shame so many right wing people do this.

Not that it means much either way as the terms "Nazi" and "fascist" get thrown at conservatives all the time for no good reason.

I use it as an insult sometimes.. but it's only with people I know like.. well, that's because you are liberal hippy
