Should WikiLeaks be considered part of the Press

Does WikiLeaks Qualify as "press"?

American government doesn't like Wikileaks because they're embarrassing them. Think they'd care if this stuff was coming out about our foes (only)? The problem is not Julian Assange, the problem is our interventionist foreign policy. If we didn't participate in these embarrassing policies, there would be nothing to expose.
Very true, I wonder how the middle eastern countries would react if we withheld "foreign aid" until they took out their resident terrorist training camps, and silence the imans who preach jihad...

What if we took out the military bases out of every Middle Eastern country, and every other country and mind our business? I think terrorism rates would sky rocket down..

I don't think so. It's purpose is far too specific and targeted.

Basically, it's an online clearinghouse for disseminating stolen/classified US government communications.
Have you not seen the thousands of other documents from other countries also contained in the reports?
Wikileaks is a just press. They release information that the government, by and large, was trying to hide from its populace. The people have a right to know the intricacies of their government, especially when the actions committed by said government violate several peace treaties and war laws.

I don't think that it's hard to answer myself. I think that they should be considered as part of the "press". To me the "press" is any organization that disseminates information to the masses that is truthful and accurate.

That pretty much eliminates Fox News...

Why should it matter if it is targeted? Would it matter if it was considered a news agency if it just targeted celebrities?
I'll dumb it down a bit then so you understand. It is akin to considering a money-laundering operation as part of the banking establishment.

No matter how one benefits from its services or tries to spin it, it remains a peripheral and non-certified entity.

Not to say Wikileaks isn't an interesting endeavor. But to label it "the press" is a misnomer.

I would loosely call Wikileaks part of the press establishment, because they are couriers of information which the press uses. I don't think they are a press agency in of themselves.

Well if you think about the news or press just gets journalists to get a story then give them what they come up with. However, in some cases someone can give the news a story to run. Wikileaks doesn't have journalists so they just rely on outside sources giving them information. In fact, if they pay for the information it is literally the same thing. The only difference is, Wikileaks isn't owned by a corporation.

Corporatization isn't necessary for an organization to be journalistic. There are plenty of free lance or grassroots agencies that are not incorporated, and are run by volunteers.

Journalism interprets invents, whereas couriers of information provide the raw info/data for the story to be told. Both are necessary for journalism to function properly. Also, the fact that Wikileaks has close ties to many international press agencies is why I would say they are at least somewhat a press agency.

Yes and for all the Haters? Freedom of Press is just that.
