..... and run by Two sides that act like Republicans and the other like Democrats... and this includes ALL the spin doctors....
When you put that company up with others, such as what you see in the Forbes Top 500, what do you feel would happen?

I personally see not the good of the Company but 90% of the time, for the good of ONE side of Top Management over the OTHER side of Top Management. And as this goes on I see the company that lies and screws its employees. I also see a company that can not compete against other companies. I can see BOTH sides of Top Management ETERNALLY trying to blame and destroy the OTHER side of Top Management, while the good of the WHOLE company becomes ripped apart in a power struggle. And as this happens... the whole company becomes disfunctional. Its doesnt FOCUS on sales. Doesnt FOCUS on working together to get the job done.
I see a company that will NOT last and should not last.

While other companies internally work for success in a professional manner..... they compromise and listen to ALL departments to achive a common goal...

If the President/CEO could fire every single executive who disagreed with him and replace them with people who supported his vision for the country/company, governance would actually be pretty easy.

Yes but thats is NOT the question. Nor is it the reality.

Neither is expecting a country to act like a company. There is no such thing as monetary policy within a company.

:wassat1: yes... there IS. Not sure where you have been working but EVERY corporation has a policy regarding expenditures, ROI and

That is only a piece of it. They have no control over taxation, the currency, or inflation (not total control, but much more input than a company has) while a country does.

You are not keeping with the concept of this thread.
Thus you are banished to the planet of Gallifey that is in a timelock. Im sorry.

Than the concept of this thread is wrong.

For example, if the country can spend at a certain % deficit, yet still minimize debt because of things like economic growth and inflationary targets. A company cannot do that.

Yes but thats is NOT the question. Nor is it the reality.

Then what do you want to discuss?

The country is not a company and doesn't work like a company. You seem to get that, but say it's not the question. Yet if someone says the country isn't a company, you say it's also not the concept of this thread.

So the question is "What if America was a company....but it was also not a company?"

In that case, the answer is that I'd take another hit and fire up seamless web to order some nachos.

I don't think comparing a country to a company is a good idea.

A company has only one overriding purpose: to make a profit selling a good or service. They do that however they can.

The purpose of a government is to set policies within it's area of governance, and in a democratic government to do so while balancing the various interests within that area. That is quite different from how a company operates.

If you tried to run America like a company, then we would be screwed.

For one, companies tend to be autocratic, not democratic. There go your civil liberties.

For two, companies tend to be focused on profits, not welfare and security. There goes your infrastructure.

For three, companies tend to be short term thinkers when it comes to resources. There goes anything of nature and beauty for your grandchildren to inherit.

Fine God damnit! This is a WHAT IF... senario! Im NOT saying that the Country IS a company or is run like a company. BUT... WHAT IF IT WAS!? I thought this thread would be fairly easy to understand but Im wrong.
Yeeesh... :?

That isn't monetary policy, that's fiscal policy.

What is the difference between fiscal and monetary policy?
Monetary policy is typically implemented by a central bank, while fiscal policy decisions are set by the national government. However, both monetary and fiscal policy may be used to influence the performance of the economy in the short run.

Umm OK. If the United States was a company, it probably wouldn't be a very good one. Just like if Exxon was a nation, it probably wouldn't be a very good one. If the Democratic Party were a family, it would be a dysfunctional one. And if a Freedom House report was a comic book, it probably wouldn't be a very entertaining one.

What's your point?

My point is if the people that ran a corporation acted like the leaders of this Nation (unprofessional and self serving) then the company wouldnt last very long. And thats what Im seeing now in this country! The way these politicians act is horrible! Especially the Conservatives! Thier main goal is to make Obama a 1 Term President? REALLY? Geeeee... I thought it was to freakin serve Americans by making thier lives better. By making jobs. By creating a strong economy. By following the Constitution..... NOT expending a HUGE amount of money and influence getting the President fired!
THis Country NEEDS to act like more like a corporation if it wants to survive. It needs to balance the books. Work TOGETHER to get things done for the greater good of our Nation. Not this Child-like Partisan BS.

Then our political culture needs to change or we need to legislate around the problem. In particular, promote republicanism or reform our bicameral legislature into something resembling a parliament.

It's worth noting that ultimately politicians are responsive to the people, and that the American people bear the lord's share of the responsibility for the state of our society. If a politician tried to be efficient, honest, and virtuous, they would be punished at the ballot box. The politicians who are most rewarded are the ones who (1) give more services, (2) impose fewer taxes, and (3) successfully convince people that the resulting problems are the fault of other politicians.

Well, that's the question, isn't it? Exactly what should be done for the greater good of our Nation?

We all have different thoughts on the matter. And all those different thoughts should be heard. And we should never stop those different thoughts from being said. Which means we should keep up with those arguments.

I know it is often said that "the people need leadership right now." Well, you know what? No. I don't need a leader. I don't need people to tell me what to do. I've had people trying to tell me what to do all my life. And every time I've tried to listen to them, nothing but bad has happened because of it.

So I don't want my politicians to work together. I want them to work against each other. Because the more they focus on screwing over each other the less I'll have to worry about them screwing me over.

And the more arguing that happens in politics the better I can follow my own conscience rather than be forced to follow what others push through into law that goes against my own conscience. And I'm personally better off for that.

I think America is a corporation. Without a doubt a corporation. Look at the new laws written in the past decade. Almost 100% of them are dealing with corporate law. The rights of the individual are being put behind the rights of the corporations. Example credit card debt can no longer be declared on bankruptcy. Another fine example lets take the current president Obama. His annual salary is somewhere in the 400k range... or 1.6 for the four years... Now his campaign raised 650 million... Now tell me the USA is not a corporation with a blue puppet at the helm cause the red puppet was an idiot. Further proof... Not one of the crooks from Wall Street or Goldman Sacks has been indited for crimes against the american tax payer.. Further proof General Electric and Exon didnt pay a cent in taxes last year.....

I disagree with your statement that the american people, the common Joe has any blame to the current situation the USA finds itself in today. We are given a fictional dream called democracy.(beats all others hands down i will give you that in theory only) We are given a red puppet or a blue puppet. when the red puppet screws us over we all turn to the blue puppet. The red puppet waits in the wings until the blue puppet screws us over and then we get the red puppet back... Its a game where the people at the top the people who are giving millions of dollars to make sure things dont change. Mean while Common Joe is getting poorer and poorer the rich are getting richer and then theres a breaking point. Let them eat cake! Another thing that bothers me about this post. The american tax payer didnt take american jobs and sell them to China or Mexico. That was done in the name of business to increase profits by a suit with a wall street degree. I have a friend working with CASE tractor. Case closed a factory in ND to reopen it in Mexico. My friend an engineer had to go to mexico to train a mexican how to do his job. At five dollars a day how many tractors are the mexicans going to buy at 175k each? You take away american jobs you loose american homes.. american lively hood.

So you mean the federal govt as a company, not America.

I'm not claiming the American people don't suffer or that we don't possess any good qualities, but we aren't perfect and we aren't passive victims in our political inefficiencies. Neither side of the spectrum tailors their views to fit the pressures of reality, and political parties organize around that discontinuity because that's the only way to win seats. People dislike the general lack of utility in our government, but they are dependent on the drama of politics and contribute to keep it going.

I think the facade of a vote is merely that. Gives the common man a sense that what he thinks matters. That his vote can bring about change. I am sick of the merry go round. If its not the republicans stopping the democrats at every turn its the democrats stopping the republicans at every turn. They are both working against the other and nothing gets done. Does this make sense to any thinking person? Change is bad....
