If America Was a Company......

What would happen is America was a Company?

My point is if the people that ran a corporation acted like the leaders of this Nation (unprofessional and self serving) then the company wouldnt last very long.

OK...but the nation isn't a corporation.

The Giant Noodle said:
THis Country NEEDS to act like more like a corporation if it wants to survive. It needs to balance the books.

Why?

Work TOGETHER to get things done for the greater good of our Nation. Not this Child-like Partisan BS.

Well, this IS pretty child-like. Everyone has a different idea of the "greater good of our Nation." Are you proposing that everyone "work together" to promote yours?

And what does "work together" mean, anyway?

I like what Snafu said.....

I disagree with your statement that the american people, the common Joe has any blame to the current situation the USA finds itself in today. We are given a fictional dream called democracy.(beats all others hands down i will give you that in theory only) We are given a red puppet or a blue puppet. when the red puppet screws us over we all turn to the blue puppet. The red puppet waits in the wings until the blue puppet screws us over and then we get the red puppet back... Its a game where the people at the top the people who are giving millions of dollars to make sure things dont change. Mean while Common Joe is getting poorer and poorer the rich are getting richer and then theres a breaking point. Let them eat cake! Another thing that bothers me about this post. The american tax payer didnt take american jobs and sell them to China or Mexico. That was done in the name of business to increase profits by a suit with a wall street degree. I have a friend working with CASE tractor. Case closed a factory in ND to reopen it in Mexico. My friend an engineer had to go to mexico to train a mexican how to do his job. At five dollars a day how many tractors are the mexicans going to buy at 175k each? You take away american jobs you loose american homes.. american lively hood.

I look at America as a great power that has gone off their brand for to long. Look at the company Apple:

In the 90s, Apple went off of nothing but their name and gave little care about actual quality, overcharged, and at one point was going to be sold to companies that we wouldn't even imagine could afford Apple nowadays. That was until Steve Jobs came back and took control. In less than 10 years time, the company now is worth more than Microsoft and is #1 in several areas. I do not know what our "steve Jobs" will be for America. I don't think it will be a president, nor one single event, it will have to be a rapid amount of events all at once that set things into motion...perhaps a major war? Perhaps a great shift in how our economical landscape works? Who knows?

Great analogy and I also agree.

But here's the problem with that analogy.

Apple only had to worry about one sector of several related industries.

The United States has to worry about all sectors of all industries.

So, yes, Steve Jobs turned Apple around after the '90's. But the question is would he have been able to do it if Bill Gates owned a controlling interest in Apple stock?

Lol that was actually part of his plan! When Jobs came back in '97 Apple and Microsoft settled a patent dispute out of court and gave 600 million+ in stock to Microsoft!

Although our Gov't is structured differently than a corporation, there are many 'Best Practices' that can be translated. China is kicking our ass on many fronts. Plus there are things that our Gov't can learn from corporations. I STRONGLY feel as a Nation we forgot... United we Stand... Divided we Fall.
This CONSTANT hatred between the TWO Parties we have have left a path of destructive hatred and a large (and false) division in our Nation. WE ARE AMERICANS!!!! Quit the bitch-fest and lets get to WORK!!!
BOTH parties have much more in common than we see advertised by the Spin Doctors.
The things that ARE unique to each party.... just work together to compromise. Stop this Filabuster crap! Currently the Republicans wont allow Obama to pass ANYTHING that would make his look good. That is NOT what Americ SHOULD be.

All of that may be the case. But the ending of the filibuster is a different issue than making the American government run like a corporation.

If it is reform you want to talk about, the biggest piece of reform that I can advocate is the institution of Instant Run-off Voting to allow third party candidates to get elected to office. Doing that will help allow greater variety in political thought to be represented on a federal level.

However, I must warn you that the practical reality of that would be that Congress would have even more deadlock because of the sheer number of parties that would be viable in Congress.

And so to keep America functioning more power would be given to the executive branch than it has now. Which would mean shifts in the balance of the separation of powers. And also lead to a realistic system in which the President and the executive agencies are more like temporary dictatorships of a single party or a coalition of a few parties.

But that is because we use the presidential system of government. I think that a better system for a multi-party system would be a parliamentary system, as coalitions of various parties can be made.

But the United States will never do a change that large. Such a change would require a re-written constitution. And if we were to implement a new constitution, the polarizing nature of politics would be such to make governance of current U.S. territory unviable.

Do you feel the current Judicial Branch is too powerful?
Also do you feel the Filibuster is now used in a way we never intended?
Also how would you change America to make it a more cohesive unit that works for the best interest of Americans.... and less for the better of THIER party?

Do you feel the current Judicial Branch is too powerful?

I don't know. I do think, however, that it is just as corruptible as the other three branches of government. However, one thing that I like about our current judicial system is how stable it causes our government to be, with regards to lengthy appointments and life-long terms for the Justices on the Supreme Court.

Also do you feel the Filibuster is now used in a way we never intended?

I think the goal of the Senate is to be a more deliberative, more patient body than the House of Representatives. The filibuster can help that.

However, I think it does get abused since it can require supermajorities in order to pass legislation. Which I think is wrong.

Therefore, overall, I wouldn't mind seeing the filibuster gotten rid of so that the Senate can be more democratic in it's procedures and passage of legislation.

Also how would you change America to make it a more cohesive unit that works for the best interest of Americans.... and less for the better of THIER party?

Well, again, I have to ask "What is the best interest of Americans?"

But if you just want answers with regards to procedures...

1) Referendums on the federal level
I want to give citizens the power nationwide to affect federal legislation directly. This way, the citizens can repeal unpopular laws or even restrict pay to Congressmen. This will cause federal officials to be held more accountable, and give more power to the people.

2) All laws sunset after 20 years
One reason why we have such a plethora of laws is because Congress needs to be seen as doing so, which is why they also pass useless laws. So I would make all laws, federal, state, and local, sunset after 20 years. So if legislators want to keep a law, they would have to re-up it. And by doing so they can be seen as doing something without being required to write additionall ****ty laws that hurt the citizenry.

But it's not a company - it's a country. Companies are just machines for generating money. A country is about people.

Please see above posts. Not going to RE-explain

Except you didn't explain anything. You just asserted that the federal government should act like a corporation, without providing any explanation why.

Any real US company that had to borrow a trillion dollars a year to stay in operation would be listed somewhere on Pinksheets with a price somewhere between a tenth of a penny and a tenth of a tenth of a penny. Any US company that printed money in order to buy its own debt because its foreign debtors no longer would, would not only quickly be shut down by US regulators but would have the CEO in jail.

Any bank that had TARP assets as half of its balance sheet would be shut down by federal regulators. Yet, the Federal Reserve has TARP assets as half of its balance sheet and is the most profitable bank in the country. Figure that one out.

OK. But the federal government is NOT a corporation.

Somewhere between "a corporation that acted like the government would fail" and "the government should behave more like a corporation," there's a logical disconnect in this argument.

In fact, I'd like to know how many of you out there would buy the stock of a company whose CEO only had two years of experience and that was with a national company as junior middle management.
