Mandatory military service?

Would you support a mandatory service when a person turns 21 or 18?

Mandatory military service or civic service assumes that we the people belong to the state.
I do not belong to the United States of America, I do not belong to California and I do not belong to you.
Involuntary servitude is contrary with a free society.

Calm down... your safe from service for the time being. No one is going to hurt you or expose you to danger. As long as we keep the reserves and recruiting beefed up, you youngsters can continue to hide in plain site.

However, A free society is dependent on a strong military to respond to threats to us and our allies. Absent that... we could go to a dictatorship or or even worse, a theocracy. Once we pull out of Afghan and Iran flexes their muscles [with Russia backing them] then perhaps you will understand how dangerous the world really is... same thing could easily happen with n korea/china. When the pentagon gets really nervous like they did in southeast asia, it doesn't take much to provoke a serious conflict... which can quickly escalate.

Yes. They need to have the military experince national service to our country. That would be alot better then planting trees for a summer performing government service in the jobs corps. Also they get shared experinces helping to foster a sense of national pride that would go along way toward ending the two party mongering we now face-.Service your country?

The military MUST change to "suit the times".
I'd like to see a mandatory public service time for all young adults....this would be discipline training, among other things, similar to the military.
The military, as it is , is so far behind the times.......
We need a national commission on this......without any conservatives to obstruct.

No man is an island.

yeah, discipline, respect and honor are such outdated concepts.

and the winner of today's "most blatantly partisan load of crap" award goes to ...

Even if we follow this uber-pacifist approach, the absolute majority of the roles within the military still do not involve any form of combat in them.

There are still better things to do with the time and money spent on the military. Instead of building jets, we could possibly find a cure for cancer.

why is it that none of "you guys" ever suggests diverting money from entitlement programs to fund cancer research? Or how much research do you think the tax dollars that are spent on presidential inauguration parties would buy?

let's cut "waste", having a strong defense is not wasteful spending.

What do we need a strong defense for?

I'm sure there were lots of guys in Poland and Paris during the '30s who asked the same question. Are you sure you are conservative? :lamo

Depends on how strong the military is. If it's stronger than it needs to be than it is wasteful. There are no blank checks when the revenues that support the services could possibly used for better purposes elsewhere. Defense is essential but to what extent it is used is another story.

unfortunately the retards are in charge of determining what constitutes a "better purpose". bailouts to rich ****s doesn't qualify as "better" in my book.

I oppose any mandatory service unless someone is convicted of a crime or is on the dole. People who graduate, get jobs etc already have proven they have plenty of self discipline

and your comment oozes of hackery claiming we need a socialist commission without any input from the rational side of the aisle

I can't disagree with that.

Oh, man, the patriotism displayed by some in this thread just brings tears to my eyes.......
(sarcasm)

Conscription is nothing more than slavery, so I gave a vehement hell no.

Never heard truer words.

only if we used our military for defensive purposes.

But since that is clearly not the case, no way in hell do we make it mandatory that people have to go protect Europeans, or reshape the middle East.

I, for one, would never want to serve next to a conscript. They are notorious cowards compared to volunteers, and they let lines break.

Good points....I still maintain that we should have put the blame of 9/11 on Suadi Arabia, and presented them with a bill for replacing the Twin Towers, plus another bill for compensation to the families who lost loved ones or otherwise suffered from the event. If they don't pay up, we "deliver" a few cruise missles in the middle of the night, every night, until they fess up and pay up.

The Iraq war was purely revenge being exacted by the shrub. Had little to nothing to do with 9/11, except maybe to satisfy some blood lust.
Iraq was made to pay for the sins of the Saudis.

No. No mandatory service of any kind. This is supposed to be a free country.

freedom is never free
True, but what does that have to do with mandatory service?

if you have to force people to defend freedom with the threat of force, then you already lost it.

sad isn't it??? that so many who cry about this being a free country are unwilling to lift a finger to help keep it that way.

what does the "this is a free country" copout have to do with mandatory service. any time any tard gets told to do something they don't like or told they can't do something they always squeal "it's a free country".

If it's a "free" country, why do i have to pay taxes? why am I required by law to show up monday morning for jury duty? why did I have to register with the selective service when I turned 18? why, why, why??????

why would mandatory service impinge on my "freedom" any more than paying taxes, or obeying speed limits, or a million other restrictions the govt places on me?

It's not like they are making you a slave. It's a couple of freakin years, with a good chunk of that spent in training.
