Atheism in and of itself is not a religion. It is simply not believing in the paranormal or a metaphysical deity of any kind.

Now certain humanist sects and other groups of atheists do take it to such a level replacing God with man and/or science. These groups however seem to be few in number and scope.

Just because an atheist is a rabid militant religion hater means little. It has little or nothing to do with him making it a type of religion simply by hating religion.
