Re: John Stossel called for repeal of public accommodations section of Civil Rights A

Well it's a right of association thing. Store owners can throw out people for all kinds of stupid things without legal recourse.

Maybe it was necessary in the 1960s, but today I can't imagine a more than a few openly discriminating stores staying in business for long or being forced to recant due to public outrage.

I think it would be more than a few. In fact, I believe it would lead to the creation of stores that are popular for the very reason that they disciminate. Racial issues is one of those things I think should die a quiet death, and slowly, as older generations die off, I believe that is happening, but its not far gone enough.

Also quite frankly, I think the pursuit of removing racism is more important than freedom of association in this case.

There would be a few here and there, but in today's society racism isn't acceptable in public. Are some people still racist in public? Certainly, but the vast majority of people, even those with private prejudices aren't.

You can't make people like each other.

In the area I live, I am quite certain that such stores would spring up overnight, increasing tensions in the area and doing no good for anybody.

You can't make people like each other.

In the short term, you can't. But as generations pass, people will become more tolerent to other races, at least in a civil society. The problem will never be completely solved, but there is nothing to be gained by letting society go backwards.

Yes, no doubt someone would open up a store immediate just so they can discriminate.

I wouldn't roll my eyes. Doing so would get certain people an instant and loyal clientele.

taxes don't, the law does.

 He said his taxes do.

Re: John Stossel called for repeal of public accommodations section of Civil Rights A

Great example of why this is something stupid to suggest. A black mother has ran out of formula for her baby, the baby keeps crying because he's hungry. There is only one store in town open but the store decides it doesn't cater to blacks. Then what John Stossel?

Who cares if a baby dies as long as we have our freedom!!!!!

But would they dominate your area's economy? There's a difference between, secretly whispering a Black joke to your friend, and making a store only serve one race of clientèle

I never disputed that. What I said is that you can't force them to like each other. The government doesn't need to be involved.

Funny, several months earlier it would have been fine to kill the baby, right?

Domination of an economy is not necessary to cause harm to a community.

Theres a difference between forcing people to like each other (which I agree will never happen) and allowing problems to get worse (which is a very real possibility)

What if NO stores were open?

Actually, I cannot answer that because I don't really have a stance on abortion.

Re: John Stossel called for repeal of public accommodations section of Civil Rights A

You have no freedom to do business with me if I don't want to. Your taxes do not obligate me to contract with you.
Are you going to vote in the poll or give your opinion on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Do you agree with what Rand Paul said in his interview on the Rachel Maddow show?

I realize you want to make me the issue here, but you need to read the OP and comment appropriately.

Like I stated above, Somalia is a libertarian paradise, you can do almost anything you want there.:2razz:

No, but a small amount of harm and significant harm are two different things. Business is business.

And forcing people together even though they hate each other won't solve the problem.

It think that he's made his opinion clear. Why do you care?

Go read the wikipedia page on Minarchism. Then continue to bash Libertarianism to your heart's content.

Re: John Stossel called for repeal of public accommodations section of Civil Rights A

No, but a small amount of harm and significant harm are two different things. Business is business.

I am guessing we both have different opinions on the scope of the harm.

And forcing people together even though they hate each other won't solve the problem.

It probably won't but if keeping it from getting worse while time does its thing is all we can do, than we should do it.

Somalia is a failed state, which was a former authoritarian government.
Many parts of it operate under sharia law.

Not exactly libertarian, in fact not libertarian at all.

My opinion on that has nothing to do with the specific things I said to you.

I commented on what you said.

And Cuba is a leftist paradise; you get free health care and everything. See, I can make entirely irrelevant statements, too.

Yeah. Somolia is more an example of anarchism.

Wwwwwwwwwhoah! Not only are you a goddamn race expert but your an OBGYN and peditriacan! WTF are you doing wasting your time here? You need to get out there and make some of these changes you keep talking about.

Re: John Stossel called for repeal of public accommodations section of Civil Rights A

Yeah. Somolia is more an example of anarchism.

Somalia is more of an example of the fall out from extreme authoritarian governments, religious states and war .

Chaos is not created by anarchism itself.

Are you planning to bring a related point into the discuss, or a failed Clinton policy execution?
