I do believe I said that the prospective employee must consent. If you consent, it's hardly an invasion of privacy.

Thats like a woman giving a BJ in order to be CONSIDERED for getting hired in a male dominated industry. If you dont consent then you dont get the job.

Does a credit history tell you why someone was late on payments? Does a credit report tell you that Joe Schmo didn't pay his debts simply because he didn't feel like it? Are there little notations that say Joe Schmo has a job and no other obligations, no family emergencies but simply just refused to pay? Seeing how a credit report does not say any of those things you can't say someone lacks honor, integrity or is a deadbeat(someone who deliberately does not pay their debts even though they have the ability to do so). Stuff does come up, people lose jobs, people or their kids have emergencies, and all kinds of other stuff happens that would cause a person to be tardy in their payments.
I stand by my post. You don't stiff people. You don't pay late. It's called honor. You plan. You save. You don't live like a gypsy. You prepare for emergencies. It's called self-responsiblity. EVERYONE should practice it.
So you care more about the integrity of your employees and less about the integrity of the people you do business with?
Yeah, pretty much.

Sounds like you never had hard times.

Everyone has had at least one hard time. Failing to prepare for it separates the winners from the losers.

By making that statement you are the biggest loser of this forum. Youre a child. Grow up and join the adults.
I think Im marking that as the most ignorant statement of the year.
You have a LOT to learn Chickie

Aren't personal attacks bannable offenses?

I think doing a credit check is utter horse**** and isn't going to give an employer any legitmate insight whatsoever into a prospective employee, but it's not an invasion of privacy if the prospective employee consents. And, the employer should be perfectly free to use their own guidelines for hiring people. If that means they want to see a good credit score, so be it. If you don't want them to see yours, don't consent and find work elsewhere.

So just because an employer is able to strongarm enough applicants into "consenting" that it becomes a cultural norm, that makes it OK? Do you think that employers should be allowed to require you to let a private investigator camp out in the bushes next to your bedroom window? Do you think that employers should be allowed to require you to turn over all your personal emails to them for the past two years? Do you think that an employer should be allowed to require you to suck their dick? As long as you're "consenting" to their precondition for employment, it's all well and good, right?

It's not that simple, Chickie.

I agree with the spirit of your post (I think) but you're oversimplifying it. I wouldn't judge anyone based on a credit report. I would look at the circumstances.

The government and big corporations are much more irresponsible but they're not called deadbeats.

If somebody is using a credit card to buy a bunch of stuff they don't need then that's wrong if they default on their bill.

As far as preparing for every emergency, that's impossible. Many people are working 2 minimum wage jobs to survive and everything is spent on just bills and food.

Someone has to teach the children Chickie. By making your VERY ignorant statement YOU made a personal attack on everyone that has poor credit. If I get an infraction it was WELL worth it. You need to step up on your game and learn like the other adults that your definition of 'losers' is not someone with bad credit.
But it very well could be someone who doesnt understand or just doesnt care to comprehend how people.... how families fall into negative situations.

I did no such thing. I spoke the truth. No one "falls" into negative situations; they choose. Again, failing to prepare= preparing to fail. It really is that simple.

I'm curious. How exactly do you think a 19-year-old who is in a serious accident should have prepared?

Saving money their whole life instead of buying crap. Having good insurance. Being responsible.

Really? A 19-year-old should have saved money their whole life in case they had an accident? I don't think 3 years of flipping burgers or running a cash register part-time is going to pay a $100,000 hospital bill.

And how, pray tell, does a 19-year-old working part time at Wal-Mart or McDonald's or Blockbuster afford that?

That is not an answer, that is what I want you to explain. Try again.

:slapme: I wouldnt say that around your friends or co-workers. That statement makes you look like you have the understanding of my friends 12 year old. Im not kidding. I joke around a LOT on this forum but you really dont know how things work in the real world. I can point to many examples on a personal level to teach you. But Im guessing you wont listen because you just dont WANT to know how wrong you are.
People LOSE money Chickie. The stock market..... health problems.... lay offs.... divorce.... a combination of those things.

I have to ask... who or how did you EVER think "failing to prepare= preparing to fail. It really is that simple"

and yes... you DID call people 'losers'.

OK..... people can pay bills, NOT buy "crap" and still have VERY little money left over.

Look Chickie, I was once like you. ULTRA Republican... I campaigned & voted for Bush 41 AND 43. I used to say the same things as you. So when Im talking to you Im talking to me 4 or 5 years ago. I was blind. I kept myself insulated in Hannity and Limbaugh and my well-to-do friends (not family though) and went to MANY republican conventions in DuPage County in Illinois. I used to call Democrats, DEMONcrats and CNN the Clinton News Network and moderates and democrats were unentitled scum that were ghetto pieces of **** that didnt want to learn. Or were just to damn stupid. They were the enemy! And I couldnt even begin to understand how anyone can be so utterly frakin' stupid as to screw up their credit. I thought exactly like you in this regard.
Then... guess what? I started to see peoples worlds collapse. (long story and I wont get into it) but..... basically I grew up with money. I went to the finest schools. I had decent jobs and saved up.
Then many things started going wrong. Did you know the bank charges $35 for a negative balance in your account even though they admit that your online balance wasnt updated at the time?

Yes to all of the above, as long as you consent. I see no "strongarming". I see someone applying for a job, and a the employer giving conditions to apply. The applicant can easily choose not to abide by the requirements - no strongarming, just a simple 'no'. I really fail to see the big deal.

Yup. I have no issues with that either. But you do realize you're speaking to a former prostitute, right?

If I want the job bad enough, I'll do whatever the **** they ask me to do. If I don't, then I won't do what they ask me to do. It's quite simple, really, and I'm not sure where the opposition stems from. It's all about personal choice. Why shouldn't I be allowed to blow my way to the top if I can? /shrug

And this kind of thing is why libertarians are viewed as a joke by everyone else.

For employment in my company.

Credit check
List of previous employers (we call all of them)
Background check
psychological background check
medical check
record of clearance
and a plethora of others.

If you don't like it, I hear walmart's hiring.

I think that documentation makes sense for your industry Rev as I presume you guys work with sensitive stuff.

Everything from HIPA to corporate secrets. Security is what we do, and it is imperative we know who we are hiring.

Credit check: Should be illegal to check
List of previous employers (we call all of them) - OK
Background check - Criminal? In some situations thats ok
psychological background check - thats not a background check or personal history so that is A-OK

medical check - Should be illegal to check
record of clearance - who sings it?
and a plethora of others - no idea

If you don't like it, I hear walmart's hiring.
Thats the point. Thats why most of these checks should be illegal. And by the way Walmart checks the same things as far as I know.

Why are you refering to yourself as a "libertarian"?

It's my company, why should you dictate what you get to hide from me?

Walmart is hiring.

I think in cases where you are dealing with secrets and there is a threat due to bribes, it is ok. Also in cases of handling cash or accounting positions. Otherwise, I agree it should be illegal.

I think if the person does their time with good behavior and is considered rehabilitated and no longer a threat to society, potential employers should not be allowed to inquire.

medical check - Should be illegal to check

I agree with that if its anything beyond a job performance evaluation. (can lift 50 lbs, can stand for long periods of time etc)
