Well like I said, I am definitely biased on this subject.
I won't hide it.
I completely disagree with the educational establishment and their procedures on "educating" children.

The hours for teachers are pretty soft, even if you have to take work home.
Sorry that's being part of the real world.

Teachers get lots of free time, even attending classes to keep up the certification is like a little vacation for the rest of us regular workers.

I agree that I get a lot of free time. Sometimes I feel like I'm overpaid. This past year I felt underpaid since I had so many behavior problems. I swear I almost had a heart attack at least once a week this past year. But you're right...we have many breaks and vacations. I don't love my job because of that -- I love my job because I love to teach kids.

They're state employees.

That means they're overpaid.

It's as simple as that.

There are plenty of excellent teachers!! And it sounds like you're one of them, Mellie. I honestly don't have as much of a problem with SALARY as I do the pension plans. After I posted California's pension plan funding problem -- under-funded 25% - I looked up Illinois. Under-funded 77%!!!! O!! M!! G!!

I agree with Harry is that almost any job that's salaried expects a LOT more than 40 hours.

Before you brag too much, read this:

The fund is down $43 billion and is 23% under-funded. So much for so-called secure investments. California teachers? pension fund faces $43 billion shortfall

And this:

Please do not tell me that you aren't paid for that extra work in the summer 'cause I won't believe you.

Be very grateful for the excellent pension benefits that your next-door neighbors are funding. If they knew what I've posted here, they'd be marchin' in the streets. Most people have nooooo idea. "Teachers are underpaid. Boo-freakin'-Hoo."

The "World Socialist Website?" How credible is that?

The "World Socialist Website?" How credible is that?

Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- The California State Teachers Retirement System, the second biggest U.S. public pension, will need to ask taxpayers for more money after investment losses left it underfunded by $42.6 billion. The pension’s unfunded liability, the difference between assets and anticipated future costs, almost doubled from $22.5 billion in June 2008, according to a report Chief Executive Officer Jack Ehnes will deliver to the board Feb. 5. The fund will ask lawmakers next year for an increase of as much as 14 percent to what the state and school districts already pay toward employee retirement benefits, said the report, which was posted on the fund’s Web site today. Didn't notice that -- here's a good one.

Your average parent is a total fool, existing only to be manipulated and consumed.

Example:

The city had to cut one (1) fourth grade teacher from it's budget.

There was one (1) kindergarten teacher qualified to teach fifth grade who was then taken from the K class she was teaching and placed in the fourth grade class to replace the reject.

Now, any normal person would say....take the 22 kids from the displaced kindergarten and distribute them among the other four kindergarten classes, and that's the limit of the reshuffling.

Naturally, no normal people work for the school district. Only an abnormal con-man sort of person could figure out some way to make the above switch involve the first, second, third, and fourth grades as well. But, public school administrators are nothing if not creative in screwing with people's families so as many people as possible can get sucked into the myth that the school is perpetually on the verge of financial collapse.

So, the some of the kindergartners were shifted into a split class with first graders...thereby screwing up the time the first graders had with their teacher. Some of the first graders were shifted to shared classes with second graders, some second graders were shifted to (you got it) shared classes with third graders, and the fourth graders were sharing classes with third graders.

And most mothers of all these disrupted children were complaining about the awful stinginess of Sacramento, and only a few of them showed any kind of a light when it was pointed out to them that there was no need to mess up the first, second, third, and fourth graders.

It was all a scam, and most parents are too damn stupid to see it, and worse, they're raising children who will be too damn stupid to see the next con from the government, too.

I won't argue your experience. Doesn't need an argument. The scenerio is silly, isn't it? But honestly, the only way parents could effect this situation would be to take it to the school board. Apathy is what the stoopids count on. And I'm afraid they're right.

I don't even like THINKING about it. Starting salaries may be about average (for a nine-month position, don't forget), but a few years down the road, and you're talking big bucks. Subjective experience: a friend started teaching at 22. She is retiring at 52. Last year, she made $160,000 as a Science Teacher, plus head of the Science Department at the high school. Her pension? 3% per year of service or $144,000 with a 3% increase per year. (Won't be quite that high for purists; they take an average of the last four years B4 they take the 3%.) Oh, and, of course, they get full medical insurance with a small kick-in.

How on EARTH are taxpayers supposed to fund THAT?????

My mom was a teacher for 40+ years. I understand that salaries were less then, but from a comparative standpoint, this is not accurate. Your friend is not telling you the entire story.

I agree with Harry is that almost any job that's salaried expects a LOT more than 40 hours.

Most people think I'm trying to be a jerk about this issue but seriously now, who doesn't work more than 40 hrs?

Biggest complaints I hear about being a school teacher are, they take work home and low pay.

Well first of all, would you rather work at home or have to stay at the school before finishing?
I know I'd rather be at home but I don't get that luxury.
Just being able to go to the bathroom, when I want, would be nice.

Almost everyone wants and thinks they deserve more money, I know I do.
Doesn't really mean I should get it though.

Here are a couple copied right off the website. I'm obviously not going to post the teacher's names. Take it or leave it. There's a link to the site in one of my earlier posts. Do your homework. You'll see it. I don't lie.

Sorry, I don't buy it for a second. Jack Roeser, the website and organization director, has an agenda and has been in trouble before. The highest salary that the website lists is for a high school teacher who makes $600,000+ per year. I checked the Illinois Department of Education website. The highest salary listed is $127,000 by someone with a doctorate and 29 years of experience. I call bull**** on the website you posted.

Here is the Illinois Dept. of Education website for folks who want to look:

If you look at my post earlier in this thread, you will see two other teachers' salaries posted from the website in the same district as my friend--TEACHERS with a Bachelor's earning $170,000 plus. It is accurate.

@ Harry -- I agree with you. And, from the posts on this website, most people are not aware of teacher salaries. Again, I'll say, teachers are sacred cows....and it's because people are uninformed and/or misinformed intentionally.

It's a well-kept secret, Ditto. Teachers make a very VERY good living for their nine months' work. Be outraged. You're paying for it.

Bull****. The information you are presenting is not accurate, as I showed. Teachers do NOT make a "very good living". They do OK, for the most part.

Now, I hear you all talking about bad teachers, and there are certainly quite a few of them. I disagree with tenure, and think that merit... as in most jobs, should be cause for advancement and retainment. However, those of you who think that the good teachers do not work hard, have no clue what you are talking about. And advancement and retainment should NOT be based on student abilities, at least not solely. This is not something that teachers have complete control over.

How is it possible for a High School teacher with 12 years experience to be making over $600,000??

I make a very good living, not just "okay".

No, it's not. The website you took this from has an agenda. My information comes from the official Illinois Department of Education website. That trumps anything you presented.

And you are presenting misinformation. Look at the website I posted and find the $170,000+ salaries. You can't because they don't exist.

It isn't. The website is posting misinformation. Check the link I posted for the REAL information.

Something tells me the $600,000 is a typo.

I have friends that teach in IL and they say the site is accurate as far as their information.

Seems to me, to be sort of a conditioned response.
I think before teachers (and other state workers) weren't paid all that greatly, after unionization though, that has flipped.

I don't think so. Look at the top 200 listed salaries. The LOWEST is $199,000+. 10 people make over $300,000. The Illinois Department of Education lists their top salary at $127,000. The website Maggie posted is messing with the numbers, somehow.

I dunno it may include retirement and health benefits.
That is part of your total compensation.

Most of the high salaries are administrators and directors. I believe the site you posted was only about teachers.

More information. If you click the names of the people that are listed in the top 200, pretty much none of them are teachers. They are mostly District Superintendents or some sort of Administrators. This is one example of the site presenting misinformation in an attempt to claim that teachers are being paid more than they are,

Correct. And that's what we are talking about. Teacher's salaries. How those who TEACH are paid.

Do you include that in your number when you tell people what your yearly salary is? It's manipulation, Harry.
