Since we're very close to the 4th, I thought it would be interesting to discuss fireworks laws.

Are they legal where you live?

If it was your choice, would you prefer them to be legal?

Poll has two sections, the first dealing with current legality, and the second dealing with what you'd like to see.

I live in Ohio, which has rather odd fireworks laws.

Certain types of fireworks are completely legal (sparklers, smoke bombs, the little popper things).

It is legal to buy other types of fireworks in the state, but you must sign a form guaranteeing that they will be taken out of the state within 48 hours.

In practical terms, most people who buy them in the state set them off in their backyards of course. Enforcement of the laws against setting them off is incredibly lax (especially around the 4th). In fact, I've never heard of a single person who was cited under fireworks laws.

Personally, I wish they would just legalize them.

We're Americans. We like to shoot guns and blow **** up, and as a free people should be free to do so.

If ya blow a hand off, that's your problem. Gov't isn't there to protect people from their own dumbassity. :lamo

This thread cannot be without the Fireworks Song: A tribute to an elite set of men who exercise their inalienable right to shoot off fireworks.

*raises a sparkler and sings along*

Fireworks are legal in my county. I live 300 yards from the county line, and in the next county over fireworks are illegal. Lol my friends come the short distance to my house to shoot them off whenever they have extras.

They are not legal here in Boston. Although some dumbass shot one the other night and the cops came. He then hit a cop...poor stupid BC kid.

As for the second part of your question I don't think they should be legal in a large city like Boston. Way to easy to hurt some one, more so that it is a large college town and we like to drink a lot.

Fireworks are legal, but not inside the city limits (or maybe you just have to have a permit; firework shows- like the big one the city puts on- are legal).

Wellsir, out here in the boonies a sky-rocket could come down amidst some farmer's hay rolls, which as it happens might be next door to some woods with a lot of deadwood laying around, which might well be next door to a heavily-populated subdivision. Rural/suburban wildfires can be a big problem.

But, it is actually pretty rare that fireworks cause any big problems, and hey, Freedom and Safety are often mutually exclusive terms!

I'll sacrifice a lot of safety for more freedom.

Fireworks are not legal here, but they are at my mother's house about 40 miles away so we always go there and shoot them off. Mostly, people here light them anyhow and I don't know how many actually get caught. I know all kinds of illegal bottle rockets and the like get launched around my mom's house and there are fire engine sirens all night, but I've never seen one catch a house on fire.

Sparklers, smoke bombs, etc are legal here, although the cops don't give a crap about real fireworks.
I live about 20 minutes from Alabama where they are legal and have firework stands all across the state line.

There are no restrictions on purchase or ignition where I live.

I would however prefer that the sale and ignition is controlled so as to prevent accidents.

Around here some lazy day sparklers aren't even in anyone's repertoire. Everyone here seems to go for 'the biggest bang' - sounds of explosions, not just some sizzlers, can be heard all over - along with the firing of munitions and the loud party sound of bumpkins drinking and partying.

And with every huge bang that rocks the air - is a chorus of hoots from people across town.

It's quite entertaining - and it's unwise to venture outdoors after dark when they really get going.

This particular incident is typical of why I would have Fireworks sold to people who are competent in staging displays.

His choice, his problem. If someone else is harmed, appropriate civil or criminal penalties. Prior restraint, no.

I really know a guy that lives down in S.C. that blew his hand off:(

 That's a shame, but every year millions of people shoot fireworks and manage not to hurt themselves. A few do get hurt. The statistical odds may be better than driving in a car...

Last night was probably a world record night for the longest chain of firecrackers ever to be set off - I think it lasted for 20 minutes, no kidding. . . it just kept going and going. My husband and I were outside playing metallurgy in the bonfire trying to figure out just how much money people spend every year on fireworks - high flying shots and such that are performance-size can't be cheap.

CO is kinda strict on fireworks. Basically most flying forms of fireworks are illegal. But Wyoming doesn't really care, and is about 30 min from my place. So it doesn't really affect me much. A short stint up 287 and I can get all the fireworks I want; year round.

It's illegal in PA, and vendors in other states aren't supposed to sell to PA residents. However, no one really cares. We were shooting off mortars at my friend's party the other night, and the cops didn't care

Now try thinking it through.
regardless of the legality of what he was doing, who pays for what this guy has done to himself.
Please do not respond with the trite answer of 'Himself' because that is so blatantly untrue.
I am reasoning that society pays by virtue of direct unrecoverable costs such as 911 operatives, Police, likely Hospital and workers.

Your argument can easily be used to make anything - including sitting at a computer - illegal or heavily regulated.
