Where's the Coast Guard?

I think most people do not consider the Coast Guard a actual branch of the military, but instead a civilian law enforcement version of the navy.

Games and Theory.

-- their entrance requirements aren't that high.
I can't do running because of my knees, so I think it would work well.

Check again. It's also not so much about entrance requirements as they don't check up on your background as much.

For myself - Paratroops again all the way, but I'd go in with my eyes wide open this time.

I would join the Air Force. I was in their JROTC program back in high school :)

To add to that, I think the Air Force is our most important branch.

I think you would have a higher chance actually in the Navy, since pretty much every job is technical to at least an extent there.
Perhaps.

But I haven't looked into either lately, so I have no real idea.

And, my main interested (fueled by copious sci-fi intake) has always been space - and the Air Force seems the most likely service branch to have any kind of contact with such. Even if only obliquely.

Or perhaps that’s just good press…I dunno.

Besides, I was actually in AFROTC (the 4-year program) for about a year – before I had to leave college due to really dismal performance brought on by not studying anywhere near enough.

Still a sore nerve for me…damnit.

Either the Coast Gaurd, Navy or the Air Force--in that order.

Why? I already spent 12 years in the Army. That experience tells me that the Marine Corps is out, too.

Not true at all.

Well, most people don't consider the Coast Guard a formal branch of the military. After all, it is subordinate to the Department of Homeland Security, and before that the Department of Transportation, during peacetime but can be moved over to the DoD in time of war. When most people think of the military, however, they think of the four branches and usually not the Coast Guard. However, that doesn't diminish the respect that I have for the Coast Guard, and should someone want to write it in, then so be it.

If you were forced to join the armed forces, but could choose which branch to join, which would it be, and why?

The Army National Guard, so that I could always come home to my boys. If my marriage were intact or I had no children I might make a different choice, but as I can't rely on the X to keep the faith and show resolve in the face of adversity, I locked her down to this state and in so doing locked myself here as well.

I suppose if I didn't care about moving around I would join the regular Army for the pay/education buffs as I'm too old for the Air-Force. Short of that, an honest look at the Navy wouldn't be out of the question.

If education, pay, family ties and a future in the civilian world were not priorities then the USMC might seem like a viable choice.

I can't say I'm worried about dying or being injured in any event. **** happens regardless, and if I die then my problems are all over anyway.

Being an asthmatic I think I would be disqualified for any infantry type job and could only do technical. I'm studying molecular biology now, so I would be able to do some pre med/forensics work. I would love to be a doctor for the military. Any branch would be ok with me I guess. Both of my grandpas served. One was in the Army and the other in the Navy. Personally I would pick the Navy because I would want to see the world. Either that or the Air Force.

Yet, it is a military unit and has military officers. For many years, a coast guardsman was indistinguishable from a regular sailor, since their uniforms were the same. Later, their uniforms were changed, but the military ranks are still the same as the Navy's.

Truthfully, Navy and Air Force has become synonymous to "I want to be in the military but don't want to see combat" for me. The Army is "I want the most benefits I can get out of joining the military," whatever that means since the organization is such a behemoth. That's why I'm going to join USMC, it's the only conventional outfit left that is completely about serving your country and pride instead of benefits. Don't get me wrong: Choosing to join any branch is a respectful decision, and it certainly puts people above a lot of others in society. The Army has some very legitimate and hard outfits, but again, it's such a monolithic organization that gets whatever it can I really don't think I'd like to be under that guise. The Marine Corps. is still all about those old values man, and you want benefits? Go join the Peace Corps.

I apologize for not including the Coast Guard. The next time I talk about our service branches, I shall include it along with our Army National Guard and Air National Guard.

If I had to choose one it would be the USAF. It has the best options for jobs that are very transferable to the real world. Unfortunately these jobs are very hard to obtain.

Yes, and it is the same way with the Navy as well. Now, there are electronic jobs in both the Army and Marine Corps, but if you want to learn a good trade, the Navy or Air Force are the outfits to join. I did meet a few airdale/avionics Marines in my travels. Not all Marines are grunts, I might add.

No need to apologize. it was an honest mistake.
