The first thing you do when you find yourself in a hole is stop digging - apparently DC doesn't understand that. If our government didn't stop pursuing the drug-war issues to pursue our war in the middle east we wouldn't be in this deepening pit.

But legalizing drugs? Would it stop this? No - it would just lighten up on the drug-users, the cartels would still be in business

Well it would depend on which drugs. I would be ok with legalizing most everything since I think it's up to the individual to decide for themselves. However, mass decriminalization of most drugs isn't a policy which could be reached, instead it would have to be of "choice" drugs. Most likely, marijuana. Making things illegal certainly encourages black market devices. It's the American way. Legalizing drugs would cut into illegal cartels and would allow for private business to create formal, legal businesses which can then be held to proper laws.

I would be okay with any natural drug that can be smoked, eaten, brewed into a herbal tea, or chewed in its natural form being legalized and I would want a law to go along with it that basically says if you get addicted you are on your own.

I'm okay with all drugs being legal to adults. However, anyone supplying a child with a narcotic for illegal or recreational purposes should get life in prison.

Drugs are bad, m'kay. I voted bloody drug war.

Legalize drugs, prohibition causes more problems than it is worth.

Since you voted bloody drug war, you also want children to get easy access from illegal drugs in the black market and not wanted it controlled by adults only.

How strange that you believe the Mid east Wars are about drugs!

I don't. (I should have clarified this)

When our current situation in the M.E. started they took focus and funding away from the drug-wars and related things (such as in-prison rehab programs and so on) and passed it to the war-hand. Instead of focusing on getting drug dealers with their crimes off the streets they started to pay that attention to terrorists, instead. Thus, drug rings and gang activity and their illegal function exploded - being unchecked and far less scrutinized.

Really? I want that? Funny, I don't think legalizing drugs would reduce access to children.

Most likely not. It will shift drugs into a regulated part of industry. But the same is true with cigarettes and we see how well that stops some underage teenagers from smoking. Still you could ask would you be more comfortable with kids getting drugs from a gas station or from a drug dealer.

Really? Then where are all the cigarette cartels? I can guarantee you that if tobacco was illegalized, they would exist, since tobacco is supposedly as addictive as herion.

Criminalizing drugs hasn't prevented access for children now. Hell, kids probably have an easier time scoring drugs than adults do.

Well, there's also other reasons why they aren't being checked or scrutinized - it's because, quite often, we have law enforcement officers who are in with the drug trade.

I did not claim it had.

Who exactly is going to regulate meth and speedballs? People saying 'harder stuff' should be regulated are out of their ****ing minds. Junkies, ex-junkies and wannabes alike.

Actually, I've never done hard drugs, and have no desire to. I just want to decriminalize drugs because I think 1) prohibition doesn't work and 2) treatment for drug use is infinitely better than incarceration for drug use. So I say let people use drugs if they want to and help them get off it if they so choose, and if not so be it. I think that's a hell of a lot better than locking them up in prisons, being trapped with violent offenders, and then get caught up in the vicious cycle of poverty and crime to survive because they're an ex-felon and no longer are considered for anything but menial jobs.

Why is marijuana classified as a narcotic?

Narcotic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A looser usage of the word "narcotic" to refer to any illegal or unlawfully possessed drug including marijuana and herion is common worldwide, although these substances are not considered narcotics in a medical or scientific context.

This "war", and the others ,are not working, are not effective, and are too costly.
What we should be doing is learning why our young wish to destroy themselves....if in fact these drugs are that dangerous.
I do not believe what the men in power tell me.
But, its common knowledge that the drugs are not good for us, and this I accept. But, if others hate themselves so, let them do it and be done....with it.

Private businesses? I mean, nicotine is among (if not) the most addictive drugs out there, and it's completely legal for adults. For that matter, excessive fast food eating has much worse long term effects on people than most drugs do, and we haven't banned it either. Some people get excessively addicted to video games, gambling, etc etc etc. Why not ban those while we're at it?

Seriously. what's worse? (Possibly) A few more crackheads screwing up their health, or more kids getting murdered in drive-by drug shootings?

Drug legalization would not prevent kids from getting drugs. When I was a minor I got my hands on cigarettes and booze just as easy as I got my hands on weed. Its just as easy for a minor to get booze and cigarettes as it is pot or some other drug. You got to socialize with people to know how to buy drugs and who to buy drugs off of, so if you can do that then you can do the same thing when it comes to booze and smokes. Because there is always someone who knows someone who has a older cooler brother or sister, parent who who is trying to be hip or a older friend who doesn't mind going to the store as long as you hook him up with some cigs or a beer or two. So the idea that legalizing drugs would prevent minors from getting them is a load of crap and nothing more than a BS stoner talking point. Heck it would probably easier for a minor to get his hands on drugs since drug legalization means that someone would not have to have face charges for illegal possession.

Indeed! I sounded like a nut for a second, yeah :)

Really? Then where are all the cigarette cartels? I can guarantee you that if tobacco was illegalized, they would exist, since tobacco is supposedly as addictive as herion.

Cigarette cartels? You mean the cigarette companies. Yep - they do exist and are quite ruthless, they're just functioning within the means of the law instead of outside of it.

There will always be the 'black market' or the 'underground' - even if it's perfectly legal there will always been groups and cartels trying to make more money by underselling. As does often happen with cigarette-rings. . . remember years back when an underground gang was convicted of tax-evasion. They would buy cartons of cigarettes by the hundreds in Texas (I believe) where is was cheaper per carton (cost and taxes) and then drive it to North Carolina where the cigarette-taxes were a lot higher . . . thus spending far less $$ to buy out of state and drive it back to their store - under the radar and around Uncle Sam. . . all for profit.

So legalizaton won't prevent crime - the criminals will just have a bit more wiggle room or will have a different function. Rather than making money by functioning illegally - they'll make money by skirting the system.

Kind of off subject, though, but I simply don't support the legalization of drugs that are prfoundly mind-altering. Its level of addition isn't so much the issue, it's how it effects the person. Right now tobacco, caffeine and alcohol are our 3 main legal substances - there are others, sure, but nothing quite so widely used. So - I think that present a social level of tolerance is and can be used as a gauge. So - cocain, meth . . . no. But a bit of pot? Sure, why not. I don't hear of people beating their wives to death because they were high on weed.

Addiction, wanting to get away or have a mental vacation, is almost human nature - we've been smoking and drinking since the dawn of man. . . but too much of a fun things can be bad. It's not the drugs themselves but how people behave while under the influence that makes it bad.
