Didn't read the whole thing, so sorry if this is redundant.

The owners of that school are almost certainly hypocrites, holier-than-thou types. I would bet money they had premarital sex just like the vast majority of Americans do. Hypocritical, judgmental people without Christian forgiveness. This is not a quality lesson they teach.

This 'forgiveness thing' - if they forgave this teacher (which may or may not be within their belief, not all sects of Christianity believe they can forgive someone for their wrongs. Some believe only a minister or clergy can. Others believe that only God can) - but if they forgave this teacher then what message would they be sending to the students?
"It's ok to do anything you want, no matter how wrong or immoral, because we'll forgive you" . . .???

This forgiveness thing, in my opinion, is where religion can be a bit dangerous and misleading.

For the record, I think this a retarded reason to fire someone.

Not wrong.

She was not fired for being pregnant. She was fired for premarital sex which according to the school is a breach of the moral contract she was shown and agreed to upon hiring.

She surrendered the information freely as well, so no invasion or privacy either.

As I said the Florida law does not in any way disagree with the Federal laws.

Nope... Wrong.

I gave you the website and link to the federal laws prohibiting this injustice, but here it is a little more specifically for you.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978

The terms 'because of sex' or 'on the basis of sex' include, but are not limited to, because of or on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions; and women affected by pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions shall be treated the same for all employment-related purposes, including receipt of benefits under fringe benefit programs, as other persons not so affected but similar in their ability or inability to work, and nothing in section 703(h) of this title shall be interpreted to permit otherwise.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act

If the school is private and the employee was fully aware of the moral code, then she couldn't have engaged in the prohibited behavior and at the same time expected the school to betray their moral code, which she had knowledge of.

I don't agree with it certainly, but they had a legal right to fire her.

Wrong.

I agreee, but that is still illegal.

But the thing is that they most surely violated that same moral code themselves.
That just makes them hypocrites, it doesn't make their professed moral code invalid.

Everyone has been, is, or will be a hypocrite.

Sure it is. The lesson they teach is that pre-marital sex is against the moral code they believe in.

Great. But it is still Illegal to fire a person because of pre-maritial sex.

I don't agree that the cause was just and I hope the people who made that decision burn in hell but... they can hire and fire whoever the hell they want. This is America dammit.

Ah, but they had no visible evidence in the form of a pregnancy!

No, it's not.

Those tidbits of info only show that it is illegal to treat a woman differently from another employee because of pregnancy.

As has been stated, this woman was fired because her application for maternity leave clued in the school staff to her potential premarital sexual acts - They asked her about such, and she informed them that she had, indeed, had premarital sex...Whereupon they fired her.

Obviously, this action does not fall under the quoted laws, as nowhere in those laws (as you posted) does it list "discrimination because of sexual acts" as an unacceptable reason for employee termination.

Perfectly legal, if unreasonable in my book.

As an example, it would also be legal for them to fire this woman if she was not pregnant - But they learned of her premarital sex.

I always find the moralists on this particular subject silly. See, almost all of them had premarital sex, just like almost all of us here on this thread and everywhere else in the world.

Before somebody here says it isn't right just because everybody else does it, I'll just say it is normal. It's what we do. We have a sex drive, and we act on it. Make it morally wrong if you want to (not you personally, necessarily), but it is the normal way humans behave.

That just makes them hypocrites, it doesn't make their professed moral code invalid.

Everyone has been, is, or will be a hypocrite.

It makes that code a lie for them personally, and for just about all of the rest of us.

Firing her is treating her unfavorably... is it not? It would have been legal if she had not been pregnant, she has a loophole since she is pregnant. The fact that she is pregnant is what makes it isllegal. It is right there in plain english. Agreed, if she was not pregnant, she would have no case.

But that's not really my point. Course, you're kidding.

My point is that, it's a shame that they have to pick on a poor pregnant woman, who slipped up and got pregnant while engaged, chose not to abort, and is probably just about as good a Christian as they come. I believe they have the right to be Pharisaical hypocrites of the first order, but I think they are assholes.

She wasn't fired for being pregnant. She was fired for having pre-marital sex. That's like saying that because the police arrest a man who fits the description of a known murderer, he's being arrested for being a 6'3" White guy with a 1967 Oldsmobile. The pregnancy was used as evidence that she did something that went against their rules, not the grounds for dismissal.

I bet the virgin Mary would REALLY have been run outta town on a rail.

Doesn't matter... the two cannot be unlinked.

No they can. Firing someone because they got pregnant is illegal. Firing someone because they had sex which happened to result in pregnancy is legal. What if she hadn't gotten pregnant, and the school found out through other means; would it be legal then?

Bodhisattva, she was not fired for being pregnant or anything related to pregnancy. She was fired for breaking the schools moral code. A code she agreed to upon hiring.

None of the laws stated apply in any way.

Even if she had not been pregnant and admitted to premarital sex, she would have been fired.

They can say that she was fired for any reason, the result is the same. She was fired when she was pregnant, and that violates the Federal Law. End of story. *shrugs*

No it does not.

So if an employee steals money and gets fired. She can then sue because she was pregnant?

I guess no company can ever fire a pregnant woman for any reason? Seriously, that is your argument? :doh

PS that is most definitely NOT the Federal law.

Did you even bother to read the story? She was not fired for being pregnant. She was fired for pre-marital sex. Which the school says violated their moral code which she was made aware of when she was hired.

This has nothing to do with the far right or anything political.

Based on THEIR morals created by THIER religion which they CANNOT force on others. If not for her being pregnant, they would never have known, therefore pregnancy caused her termination. As such, the school violated federal law and they need to be severely punished. I think 12 million dollars is a fair settlement for the plaintiff in this case.

You apples to oranges comparison does not hold water. She was fired because she was pregant and unmarried. They did not fire her being unmarried.

The christianazi assholes who run that school DO NOT have the right to force their beliefs on others.

I am sorry, BD, but you are incorrect. The school fired a woman for being pregnant and that IS a direct violation of FEDERAL LAW.

Yes they can just like the school that had a "moral code" and kicked the kid out and would not let him graduate for going to prom. Oh that one never made it to court either.

When a person is hired and asked to follow a moral code by a private entity, they can be terminated for breaking that code.

If not for her being pregnant, they would never have known, therefore pregnancy caused her termination.

Ooops! Wrong again:

She said when asked, she admitted that the baby was conceived three weeks before the wedding. A week later, she said the school fired her. - FOXNews.com - Fla. Christian School Fires Teacher Over 'Fornication' Claims

As such, the school violated federal law and they need to be severely punished. I think 12 million dollars is a fair settlement for the plaintiff in this case.

Yea just like the prom school settlement.

You mite want to read the story and the laws in Florida.

You are absolutely correct. They fired her for premarital sex.

Then the teachers and students are free to go and teach or learn at a public school. Since this is a private school, they most certainly can.

No it's not and just like the prom thing you will be shown wrong again Vader.
