There seems to be some confusion about this word. I tend to use it to refer to a culture, where others seem to want to use it to refer to a race.

I believe it refers to a culture. I have known both redneck white and black people.

It could be both. Rarely do I hear the term redneck being used against anyone but white people. Redneck describes a certain type of white people.

Even if it is use primarily against white people. Do you feel that the aim of the insult is against their race or culture?

I think the aim is to insult their intelligence.

Its clearly a culture just has "hick" would be. Also like someone said depending on where you are at in the country, yes, there are VERY MUCH redneck blacks. But of course it is much more commonly used to refer to white people, as they are the majority and the redneck culture is of course larger among them.

I guess it's just coincidence that all rednecks are white. How stupid.

I agree how stupid it is for you to have that opinion. Maybe you should read my post again slower, all rednecks are not white depending on where you are at. In WV there are many black rednecks and thats what people call them. Sorry youre misinformed

I am black and their was a time people called me a "black redneck" and I know a whole lot of em in Indiana. It's like the word "nigger" comes in all colors.

Was a time I had a pickup and rifle rack. Even lived in a double wide. So yes it can and does happen, lol.

I agree that the word nigger covers all colors, but the folks on the other side of this issue don't see it that way.

Ultimately, they're excusing a racial slur, because it happens to apply to white people. You know and I know that if, "redneck", applied to any other race, it would suddenly become un-cool. It's the result of politically correct indoctrination.

Post some non-anecdotal examples of the term being applied in such a manner. I've been all over the world and have never, ever heard redneck applied to a person that wasn't white. When it was used, it was an obvious insult towards that person's race.

"Redneck" is more often used as a term of pride than one of racial prejudice. It is far more likely a term like "cracker" or "honky" to be used. It has nothing at all to do with anyone being PC.

Correction. If the redneck culture didn't promote racism (admittedly it does less so than it has in the past, but there is still an element there) than looking down at that culture would become uncool.

I think its both. But pride can be used to promote the group or race over other groups or races to the point it becomes racist. For example, skinheads consider themselves a pride group as does La Raza.

You have to be careful with pride.

So you are basing this on anecdotal evidence even though it flies in the face of the vote here and most others experience? OK. Nothing to argue here.

You being "all over the world" is meaningless as you are just 100% wrong lol The word has infact been used to describe "hicks" or "country bumpkins" of any color including black and thats a fact. Like I said not only does it happen a poster in this very thread said he is black and has been called a redneck.

Sorry you can disagree all you want but if wont change the fact you are wrong and need to get out more.

I agree in general It does promote racisim but not all are racist of course and i also agree you do have to be careful with pride.

No **** no lie, I have this friend who worked in a fire department in a very rural area in North Carolina.

The Chief of the fire department was a black man, big Arms, real tall man. He chewed tobacco, had a strong southern drawl, lived in a small house, loved to go fishin', had a confederate flag tag on the front of his pickup.

There are rednecks black guys out there, though this particular guy is hardly the norm.

You just said that in another post that aren't all racists. Now, you say that entire culture promotes racism. You say that if white southerners are the only folks that promote racism.

You are not typing in complete sentances and if I do not respond to your statement, I apologize, but I am trying to interpret your post as best I can.

A person can be a part of a culture and not be completely assimilated. The culture does promote racism, but it doesn't mean everyone in that culture is racist.

It just refers to people from rural areas, because they often have red necks due to sunburn, got from working outdoors. It is a bit like why Irish people in Ireland call people who live in rural areas culties. Neither red neck nor cultie is ever(as far as I know) intended to be a positive 'word'. It usually implies characteristics such as unsophisticated, unstylish...
