Barack Obama should be mentioned in the same way as everyone else. There is nothing special about him that warrants special treatment. I think the most logical thing to do when writing about someone is to use the name they are most commonly known under, for instance it would be strange and a little confusing if textbooks talked about "William Jefferson Clinton".

The entire "controversy" about Barack Obama's middle name seems to be nothing than some extreme conservatives who want to have people think that he is a "dangerous muslim".

Thank God that the Scarecrow is not writing the textbooks in Pennslyvania or New York..
But, I fear that he is writing in the more backward states.
Its (the scarecrow) blatant and open hostility and disrespect is obvious, even to me.
In Texas, the hatred of our President is much more subtle.
I feel that this is a honesty problem; the racists are afraid of owning up to their humanity...
That they are not honest with themselves nor others.

And Harry S Truman feared that his "missing" middle name would lower his standing within our power elite (snobs, all).
Ignorance and fear, the snobs being the ignorant ones.
Now this "problem" arises again, with BO, not to be confused with BO Plenty..

I'm pretty confused by the question. Seems to be a no-brainer. Why would we treat Obama differently than other presidents in the textbooks?

Well, even though we have Franklin Delano Roosevelt, can anyone tell me what George Washington's middle name is without looking it up anywhere?

We do it differently for different Presidents. I mean we had George Bush, but then in 2001 we had to use George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush to differentiate between the two. And for most of the early Presidents we don't use their middle names for. Off the top of my head, I believe the first one is John Quincy Adams, but that's to differentiate between him and his father John Adams.

I would say to use whichever Obama uses to sign bills into law. It's as good as a rule of thumb as any.

And if conservatives want to use Barack Hussein Obama in textbooks, then so be it. It might actually inspire some American Muslim who grows up reading it to actually campaign and possibly win a Presidential election.

This whole thing is pretty stupid. Most presidents are listed without the middle name like John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Usually they only do it to separate like: John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

It's a none issue. The only reason someone would want his middle name used (like mostly of us use or middle names for anything) is slander. He should be listed as Barak H. Obama like everyone else. That's it.

I don't know why some people think his middle name is relevant to anything.

Call him whatever the majority of Americans call him. Barack Obama. If it's a college level book, use Barack Hussein Obama II on first mention, then Obama the rest of the time. What are we discussing?

Why is this even a question?

If you are trying to teach history, you need to give the full story (as well as it is known) to your students.

Did someone actually suggest that they avoid using a middle name for one president because it sounds vaguely middle-eastern?

Or...what???? :screwy :thinking

Edit: And, I liked the old "confused" smiley better.

Edit II: And, I voted for all the poll options just now, purely to be contrary.
