Which do you believe in more? Are our actions shaped by fate or free-will?

I think it is a combination of free will and instinct. I don't think our will is completely free though.

Sometimes you get the bus and sometimes the bus gets you.:)

Neither. There's nothing to suggest that fate is real. There's plenty to suggest that we do not have free will, but rather limited will.

To me, this is a lot like the nature versus nurture debate.
Some of both, nearly everyone agrees, is the correct answer.
How much of one and how much of the other is the issue still being debated.

We are all born with a set of circumstances. Some of them are immutable, and cannot be changed with any amount of effort or willpower.
To some extent, these circumstances shape our destiny.
This is fate.

Obviously, free will also exists, and we are free to act upon it. But only within the prescribed boundaries of our genetics, abilities, and circumstances.

So: some of both.

It depends on how the cards are dealt.
It then depends what you have regarding mentality, social acuity & intelligence
Then it depends on a LOT of luck

--If you are dealt with crap cards it makes things VERY difficult

--BUUUUT if you have strong social skills or intelligence or common sense you have SOMETHING to work with.

--If you are lucky (ie cousin is head guy at company or gov't position) then anything can happen

If you have decent cards, poor luck and no one you know is in ANY position of power, then consider yourself stuck in retail. :(

Sounds more like coincidence than fate.

Fate(n) -
a. The supposed force, principle, or power that predetermines events.
b. The inevitable events predestined by this force.

Whether I decide to get up an take get some food right now could be free will, or it could just be trillions of atoms bouncing together in my head telling me to. Either way, I'm getting some cereal. In other words, you're still gonna do what you're gonna do, so who cares?

free-will

"come in, don't mind the vase"
"what vase" *turns around and knocks over vase*
"how did you know"
"don't worry about that, what'll really bake your noodle later is would you have still knocked it over if i hadn't said anything"

There is no fate but what we make...

I think our actions are determined by a combination of instinct, self-will, and reaction to the actions of those in the world with us. I don't really believe in fate or free-will.

Human Fate is shaped by the choices made by human beings
as the sovereigns of their own Free Will

combined with events over which we possess no control.

In my opinion Free Will is preeminent, although a whole city
of thousands of people may be wiped 100% completely out
by some natural calamity, taking all the conscientious down
along with every wastrel, with no regard for individual merit.

Fate is what happens, free will is what you do about it...
My parents were poor and disadvantaged, and they raised 6 kids. The 6 of us being born to them is fate, the fact that some of us are doing OK, some are poor, and some are well off, is only to a limited extent fate, the rest is free will....
We don't have to accept the hand "nature" deals to us.....
