I'd have to say immigration since it has become such a hot button topic since AZ's Governor signed her state's immigration bill. Besides, in the wake of 9/11 immigration reform is way over due.

Migration is a wedge issue on both sides of the aisle meaning that such a debate is likely to highly divisive. But, more important, the House has already passed an Energy bill and Senators Graham, Kerry and Lieberman have prepared an energy bill which they are prepared to shepherd through the Senate. Let's deal with the possible.

I say energy and I am not really sure I want them doing that. I do not know that I do not want Obama or any other pro-illegal to touch the issue of illegal immigration. The only immigration I see the Obama administration doing is another McCain/Kennedy/Bush amnesty. It will have hollow promises of enforcement in exchange for legalizing 12-20 milllion plus illegals, probably with more hollow promises that they won't ever do it again and how it will not effect us and then 20 years later we have 40-60 million plus illegals waiting their turn for amnesty.

If immigration becomes an amnesty bill, and energy becomes a cap and trade bill, I'd just as soon they not bring up either one.

If, on the other hand, the Congress can actually come up with something that might help stem the tide of illegals, then by all means, let them try. It's been over 50 years since anyone has tried anything but amnesty, and that move increased illegal immigration dramatically back in the '80s. Such a bill could be a monumental achievement, but I'm not holding my breath.

As for energy, if it means getting us off of foreign oil in a few more years, let's go for it. If it means cap and trade and higher energy costs, then let's just not even try.

Where is the option for "none." I don't want anything going through the senate until after the November elections. These Democrats have done enough damage.

It was going to be the energy bill but now it is less than clear. Democrats may see an advantage in bringing up the immigration bill particularly on behalf of such endangered Senators as Majority Leader Reed and Senator Boxer. Truth be told immigration riles up the conservatives as much as it encourages the American Hispanic community. Personally I think the immigration bill isn't ready and energy is.

Wonder why one would change their minds on an energy bill because he didn't like an imigration bill? Is this how republicans decide what they will vote for?

Tax or invasion?
Tax or invasion?
Tough call. Let me grab my ankles to see which hurts less.

They're not very close to either of these. Both can be worked on at the same time but, the migration issues HAVE to be addressed more quickly and very seriously. It's been promised on and ignored far too long. Something's gonna blow really big if serious action is not taken soon.

While I think Arizona's latest law is unconstitutional, and will be struck down by SCOTUS, it shows just how serious a problem this is for that state and their neighbors.

Why is immigration suddenly become such an urgent thing? Nothing different now than it was before cheap labor was in demand by the government. Just enforce the labor laws again and things will eventually return to normal. If an illegal can't find a government promoted illegal job, they'll have no choice but to go back home.

I totally agree with you. There are many tough love type solutions that could help. The problem is no one is taking the lead to enact and then enforce any of them. This is a political hot potato as well as something many businesses, who use those illegals, don't want changed.

I do disagree that when illegals can't find a job that they'll go home. They would rather be unemployed here than unemployed in Mexico. And that's when the crime starts.

Why do the politicians want to blame the workers? For every illegal worker, there is an illegal boss. Crack down on the illegal hiring, and the workers just trying to feed their family will have to go home. Republicans want to take the focus off the real problem and blame it on the boarder and bulk a stupid fence. The boarder and the workers aren't the problem, the Bush administration was the problem.

All correct, except that the practice of ignoring illegal immigration goes all the way back to the Kennedy Administration. Eisenhower and his non PC named "operation wetback" was the last attempt to try to control the border, back in the '50's

I think, for the time being, states can deal with their own immigration problem. Energy is a more pressing issue.

However, after energy, we should focus more attention on immigration.

I'm thinking immigration and then Wall Street reform,

National sovereignty is a federal issue, not a state one. if the feds can't do what the Constitution says that they should be doing, then perhaps they should back off of issues that do belong to the states and focus on their own responsibilities.

Energy issues are being addressed, and progress is being made as technological advances occur. Energy independence is a huge problem, and we should continue working on it. It will never be considered "solved".

To my knowledge, almost nothing has been done about illegal immigrants. And it is not a huge problem. We just enforce the laws we have. We catch them and send them home. All of them.....
It is not an insurmountable problem, and it can be accomplished to the point that we can consider it solved.

So I vote for "migration"....
