Asheville NC is just about right.

My parents are in the process of moving up there and so far my dad says he really likes it.

On topic though I would say either New York or Boston. I would say Boston first, because we have a lot of American history up here. We have a lot of different cultures and different places to eat. Plus we have pretty kick ass sport teams.

Where I live

Which city in America do you think should be the model city?

I say either San Fransisco or Los Angeles.

Other. I pick my hometown Tulsa. It has a population of 385,635, 182.7 square miles of land, not that bad of a crime rate, the cost of living is not absurd like New York or LA and homes are cheap.

Los Angeles? Are you ****ing kidding me?

Burlington, VT, is a real uncelebrated hero, even if its weather isn't so great all the time. It's certainly better than Asheville.

It came down to New York or Chicago for me.

Chicago.

Chicago is the greatest city in the US. Greatest most intelligent people, greatest businesses(compare actual valuable labour with wall street crooks), nicest city.

I would say every American should be most proud of Chicago to represent them in the world.

Neither over rated New York crooktown or scum attraction Los Angeles crime hole(because of worlds biggest income differences) can compete with that.

Are you being serious? Chicago most certainly has crooks and corruption both in the private companies and in their government. It's a cesspool for crime and corruption.

If our values included glorifying the Mafia and corruption then I guess we should be most proud of Chicago. My dad is from Chicago and I have family that live there, it's a hell hole off the coast of Lake Michigan.

New York is over rated, but I would say it's less crooked than Chicago. Los Angeles is a crime hole like Chicago, but it's not much better. Chicago has it's history and "good" things, but overall it's a terrible city. I seriously wouldn't want the world to view Chicago as our model city.

In all seriousness, which parts of Chicago have you been to that are that bad? Seriously. Give me street names. I've lived here for my whole life and never encountered this mythical Chicago you are talking about.

BTW, you do know the mafia stuff is from the 30's right? Generally, the first sign that somebody doesn't really know **** about Chicago is that they mention the mob. Just sayin'.

I'm kinda partial to Boystown. Especially down around Sheffield.

Other: None.

Expansion: I don't like cities/towns, and wouldn't want to live in one, unless it was really small.

Perhaps max pop of 250-500?

Large cities, IMO, are something that needs to be done away with.

And, yes, I am at least partially serious.

What would you do with all the people if you did away with large cities?

Spread em' out somehow, I haven't thought it through.

/shrug

Why I said "partially" serious.

I’m too lazy to do much thinking today.

One of the funniest things about that area is that it's the one part of the city where the construction workers are getting whistled at.

I used to get a kick out of it, but half the guys I worked with would get all freaked out by it.

As someone who lives in the Minneapolis area (worst sprawl in the country) I would vote for Portland, Oregon. Their policy of basically drawing a ring around the city and banning development outside it has led to a flourishing downtown area and a great light rail system. Boston would be a close second. We need cities that encourage building up rather than out.

Hmm.

Interesting idea there.

I voted for Minneapolis in the poll, but if the question is what city is more American than just about any other, then I would say that Kansas City, where I live is.

Demographically the Kansas City area matches the United States more than just about any other city in America. It is in the center of the country (almost dead center), and has 4 seasons of equal length. We have more fountains than any other city in the world other than Rome, and more miles of boulevards than Paris.

The cost of living here is reasonable compared to many other cities. Architecturally, Kansas City is a beautiful city.

We have a great restaurant scene and nightlife, some of the friendliest people in America, some of the world's best BBQ, one of the largest farmer's markets in America, and we have the Ozarks within 2 hours of the city. Everyone that has ever visited us here was amazed at how nice it is here and how beautiful much of the metro is.

In my whole life, I have only seen maybe five hot construction workers. And one of those was on a stripper stage in Key West. I don't think he was really a construction worker now that I think about it.

There is no model American city, which is why America is such a model country. Its "model" city is whatever city fits each person's individual needs.

:doh

No, really?

:rofl

I'm not a fan of large cities at all. Asheville is as big as I can handle. I prefer medium sized cities/communities where its large enough to do what you need, but not impersonal like major metropolitan cities are.

If I had to pick a major metropolitan, I'd take Chicago.

You really should pick a city with better sport teams. Life in a city just seems better when you have good teams playing there.

In before 18-1, 4th and 2 and numerous other Boston sports jokes.
