Worst tippers for me were the ****ing drunks that came rolling in at 2am. Loud, obnoxious, ass-grabbing, non-tippin fools.

Well they are on a budget but damn can't you at least leave a dollar?:2razz:

I am still laughing at the person who expected a big tip from school kids. :rofl

I'm a firm believer that tipping should be considered part of the cost of going out. If you can't afford the tip, you can't afford to go out and eat.

I tend to tip based on the level of service received. If they do an excellent job, I give the full 15%, however that rarely happens.

Very true. But I usually had, eh, maybe a 20% chance of a good tip with them. And they'd always tip, it just might be no more than 10%. Which again, is why I say it's not really a racist thing, so much as cultural. I fully understand that old people and black people weren't raised to tip 20%.

We should start a tipping thread. :2razz:

Yeah about that....

It's 20% now. Has been since I started waiting tables about ten years ago. Sorry you never got the memo.

On the bright side, 20% is much easier to calculate than 15%!

It's 20% depending on where you go.

I go to sonic sometimes and when I tip it's not gonna be 15% or 20%, they guys and gals just walk it to my car.
Now the pizza guy will get around $3-$8 depending on the service time and how much I ordered.
In a restaurant, they can expect around $10-$20 or more depending on the order amount and level of service.

Any auto tip put in the bill get $0 extra from me, I choose how much to tip not the restaurant.

Then the only person you are hurting is the waiter who may have given you excellent service. Many point of sales systems auto gratuity the checks now if there are more than a certain amount of seats for the check. The waiter has zero control over the auto gratuity a lot of times.

As far as tipping, I tip well regardless. Everyone is allowed to be off their game once in a while and I don't think the server should suffer financially for being human.

I am kinda on the fence about it. Do you think there should be mandatory tips? Some places already have this in place now. Also how about paying servers a decent wage so they do not have to live off of the tips?

In the end the consumers end up paying for it all due to raised prices. I would never in my life go out to eat and not tip unless I got crap service and then I will leave a small something but not a lot. Why do I leave anything for crappy service? Because I been there and done that job.

The way it stands now? I do not really consider tips as part of going out to eat as the tipping part is -as of now-all about something called service. You do not deliver it? Do not expect a tip. Should you go out to eat thinking you are gonna leave a tip? Sure. But if you do not get the service you desire? The tip you leave should reflect that.

Also I do think poor people who can hardly afford to ever go out and eat should be able to treat themselves every now and again. Maybe they cannot even eat at the place I am waiting tables at if they must leave a tip. I even had a few people tell me upfront they could not afford to leave a tip. Did I get all pissed? Nope. I waited on them with as good of service as I would have anybody else. Did I get bummed I was not gonna get a tip? Sure but loved their honesty upfront. Do I know they were really poor? No. That was the thing really bothered me. But oh well.

I do try to tip well every time.
Going above and beyond 20% with sit down restaurants.

But when it comes to auto tips, I will not patronize that establishment again.
If they want to pad the bill, add it to cost of the items I order and up the hourly pay for the waiter/waitress.

Wait. Are you saying that if your check is an auto you should tip on top of that? If they are already getting 20% why feel the need to leave anything? Unless you want them to give them a bonus? My understanding is that the tip does go to the person serving. Is this incorrect?

It goes to the person serving but I hear people say all the time "well they cheat themselves because I usually tip more, blah blah blah". A lot of times, it's not like the waiter wanted to auto gratuity the check. The point of sales system just automatically does it.

Hey I make exceptions when the service is great.
It's only happened once though.

Lady & Son's in Savannah.

Every where else I've been, that did that, had ****ty service.

Yeah but at Lady and Son's, there's a certain expectation that it is going to be an experience in addition to being a very fattening meal. LOL

Off their game is one thing. Totally sucking ass is another. Having been a waitress for a few years, I can tell the difference. If they're bitchy, rude, and just plain don't bring me what I asked for, they don't get tipped. If they're slammed and doing their best - even if I don't get what I need/want - then they get a good tip regardless. But there is a difference.

In Europe they add a gratuity to the check. But I get out some American cash and leave that in addition.

I'm just that way. ;)

I don't think it should be mandated in most cases, though I am a fan of it for large parties. It should be based on their level of service, but if it was standard service, I always leave 20%. I normally don't drop below 15% cause I know what a crappy job it is.

It never wrecked my night, cause it happens all the time. But I still think they should stay home. If they're that destitute that they can't afford the tip, they really shouldn't be wasting their money dining out anyway.

Have You Ever Experienced Racism? If so, please feel free to share about it here.

I think people would be shocked if they knew the number of peoples who are subjected to racism on a daily basis.

I've been called "gringo" a couple times by first generation Mexican kids, but that's it. I'm Jewish, so you'd think that would have come up first, but hey.
